A decent reproduction but with disappointments.
By J. Kitchen
I got my copy of this book today. I had it pre-ordered from several months ago and it was one of Wizards reprint volumes that I was looking forward to the most. I played S1-4 as a teen.

Most of what is typical of all the reprint volumes holds true with this one. Much of the original copy has been laid out in a manner that best suites the reprint format. All of the original maps and text are included and the layout isn't that much different from the original modules. That said it's the illustration reproduction that disappoints in this book. All of the modules in this series were known for their evocative imagery and illustration.

The first indicator of the art problems was the title page for S1, the Tomb of Horrors. In my copy the illustration is dark and much of the detail is missing. The picture actually looks out of focus. (I don't think this is due to the printing process.) What makes this even more frustrating is that Wizards reprinted the S1 module as part of the 25th anniversary box set and the reproduction was as good as the original printings. (Before writing this I got out my copy of the 2000 reprint.) I'm puzzled why 13 years later the art department lacks the skill or ability to reproduce something that the previously did such a good job of. I've posted pictures of the reprint and original module for comparison under "product images" so have a look.

This quality of reproduction is a mixed bag with the interior black and white artwork. Some are clear and impressive but others are disappointing and simply inexplicable. I honestly don't understand if it's some mix of the weight and quality of the paper or simply a a mishap in the art department to finish things. If it sounds like I'm throwing the baby out with the bathwater I don't mean to. There is artwork reproduction that isn't flawed but there are a lot that are.

The most noticeable thing for me was the reproduction of the color pages from the illustration booklet from S3. (All originally Erol Otus illustrations.) What was once a high water mark in illustrations from modules at the time is now rendered in grey tones that are muted and muddled. I realize the original illustrations weren't available but ample pristine copies of the printed modules abound and could have been photographed and "fixed" for reproduction.

Someone pointed out today that there were only 4 pages in the original module. (I had used the phrase "booklet" earlier which was a mistake on my part.) I'm simply surprised and disappointed that instead of printing the 4 pages in color and tipping them in the editors chose to simply reproduce them in black and white. Those 4 color illustrations were the first time color was used inside a module and were evocative. (Particularly the froghemoth.) It was a point that a friend brought up quickly when we talked about the book.

If you don't have copies of these adventures then by all means buy it. It's a clean copy of 4 of the classic modules from TSR's backlist. The illustration problems disappoint me and if I had known what they would look like I'm not sure I would have preordered it. I understand we as customers have to buy these if we want to see them in print going forward but there's a fine line there and for me the book fell short. I hope there are some lessons learned for the rest of the module reprint line going forward.

An update of sorts:

I spent some time today talking to some friends of mine who also received this book yesterday. Most of their opinions seem to mirror mine but I think my initial reaction was a bit harsh. I've tried to amend that and edit some of my initial impressions.

I'm not sure what Wizards with this release. Is this something to be akin to the Marvel Omnibus or DC Absolute editions where older content is reproduced at the best possible standards for "archival" reasons or is this a halfway measure between those sorts of books and what has come before? It is a way for Wizards to capitalize on their intellectual property with minimal investment and labor costs and that's good. I think it's what you want when you buy this that will decide your opinion on it.

Dungeons & Dragons under Wizards has come a long way. If you look at products released in just the last year we have striking color artwork and beautiful books and you can't take 30 year old modules and transform them into something they aren't. That said this reprint disappointed me for reasons that won't disappoint someone new to the material. My 8 year old son would marvel at this and my 12 year old self loved it back in the day. That's probably the perspective that needs to be kept.

I also dug out my original modules for a side by side comparison. I've taken a few pictures and posted a few examples.

Good book if you don't own the original modules.
By Cojo2020
Overall, this is a decent product. It compiles the classic adventure modules S1 through S4, which are stand-alone and not a series. Overall the book is quite nice, following the format of the previous premium reprints of old Dungeons and Dragons books. However, this book does not have the gold-leaf trim on the page edges, and does not have cloth bookmark which the other reprints have.

Inside, the book contents are nicely presented on heavier stock paper, just like the other reprints. My biggest issue with the book is that the maps are bound into the book, which would make it difficult to use during game play. The Dungeon Master frequently has to refer to the maps, and having to flip pages is very inefficient. It would have been better if they had a separate map packet with some insert inside the cover.

If you already have the original modules, those are much more playable than this book. If you are looking at this book for collect-ability and/or reading for enjoyment, then it is great.

i really wanted this product to be great...
By shinsplint
this is a difficult product to review, mainly because one needs to look at it from two perspectives: the content and the book itself. the content is wonderful. four great, ofttimes bizarre, old adventures that complement the 1e ad&d core books recently released. based on content, i'd rate it five stars.
unfortunately, i'm also rating this as a collector. this book simply isn't up to the same standards as the other ad&d reissues. no gilded edges, no cloth bookmark, blurry art. the cover is great, same style as the others with the iconic demon face from 'tome of horrors', but they flubbed the interior art. the individual covers are black and white, and worse, out of focus. i really don't know what happened. as a collector, i'd only give it two stars.
i certainly hope wizards of the coast (a company legendary for upsetting and alienating their fan base) doesn't make the same mistakes with the "a" series that is being released later this year.
