Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No, it's Thazienne Uskreven!
By Neso
I usually start my reviews with positive comments, followed by negative ones. This time, I'm going to do it other way around.
This book is all wrong.
The lead character is so perfect, to the point of being terribly annoying. She is so smart, athletic, witty, pretty, sexy, strategically brilliant, lucky, emotionally stable and fearless that Superman himself would be ashamed. I can't give way examples of mentioned traits without giving away spoilers, but trust me I'm not being cynic or spiteful, but merely realistic. The villains (the whole bunch of Thay's zulkirs and other Red Wizards) are so simplified and outright stupid, that it is really insulting. They actually let themselves be ordered by slaves. Characters have no plausible motivations behind their actions, and contradict themselves page after page. This book disregards (a mild word) all the good work Wizards of the Coast developers have done in and around the land of Thay in the last few years. The villains have a tendency of explaining their scheming to their enemies, and all of the characters have a tendency to speak to themselves (or "to no one in particular" as the author likes to put it). The plot is choppy, but otherwise is not as bad as the rest of the elements in this book. There are a lot of logical errors in it, but that goes on the editor(s). I liked Whitney-Robinson's book in the Spider Queen series, and I really can't perceive the reason behind this novel's such poor quality. I have a feeling that this book was written with a lot of love for its main character and minimal effort otherwise.
Otherwise, I liked one of the supporting characters, Justikar, and that is probably the only thing I liked. It might have been different if I was under ten years of age. In fact, this book might be well suited for younger audience.
Besides Elminster Series (I know Greenwood has a lot of fans who won't agree with me on this one), and first three books of Avatar Series, probably the worst novel to come out of TSR/WotC publishing.

Entertaining adventure set in Thay
By Russell P. Horton
This was a very entertaining novel, featuring Thazienne "Tazi" Uskevren from the Sembia series. Set in Thay, it reveals some interesting tidbits of Thayvian history and features some of the more powerful Red Wizards rather prominently.
This book should appeal to Forgotten Realms fans in general, but especially to fans of the Sembia series and to those interested in Thay and the Red Wizards.
The story flows well and keeps the reader interested. The only complaint I have is that some parts of this book were a little unrealistic. I mean, I know this is fantasy fiction, but some of the changes that Tazi undergoes (which are later magically reversed) and some of the enemies she overcomes are a little hard to swallow.
All that being said, this is a good novel and Whitney-Robinson writes well.

Blew it at the finish
By Kafu Rahmansha
Author Voronica Whitney-Robinson follows up her book "Sands of the Soul" (which is not required to read this book) with another tale featuring Thazienne Uskevren, a thief/rogue who comes from a wealthy family but is extremely tomboyish (but, of course, she's still drop-dead gorgeous) and has a history of minor rebellion from her parents. I thought that her previous effort, "Sands of the Soul," was below-average (in writing and plot), but I was hoping "The Crimson Gold" would redeem that previous debacle with a more solid effort. For much of the book, it did.
The storyline has our heroine traveling to the ruthless lands of Thay, ruled by the power hungry Red Wizards. At first, we don't know why she's there, and really don't discover the reason until the 2nd half of the book. Nevertheless, except for the last 50 pages, I enjoyed the trials Thazienne was forced to overcome and the build-up for what should have been a great ending. There was lots of Red Wizard intrigue to chew on, and I was very interested to see how it would all turn out. And then, it happened. Everything just fell apart at the end, and story not only lost momentum, but became entirely laughable and just plain ridiculous. It was awful, really. I won't give spoilers, as that's not fair to potential readers, but it was a real shame how much potential the plot had built for itself, only to be utterly destroyed.
"The Crimson Gold" is a standalone book. Although there's room for a following novel, the tale ends right here. Don't come into this one expecting to be fulfilled. The buildup was very good, but to say it fizzled would be an understatement . . . I think "imploded" is a better word. Sadly (or not, depending on your opinion), this will likely be the last novel about Thazienne, as Ms. Whiteney-Robinson is no longer an active writer.
