3.5 stars but good enough to me for a 4 star rating.
By Robert "Dimndbangr" Hicks
Elminster Must Die! The Sage of Shadowdale book 1 is the newest novel about Elminster by Ed Greenwood. Previous books are about Elminster are Elminster the Making of a Mage, Elminster in Myth Drannor, The Temptation of Elminster, Elminster in Hell, and Elminster's Daughter as well as short stories in multiple anthologies. Bury Elminster Deep is slated to come out August 2011 and the set is expected to be six books total.

Elminster Must Die! introduces a lot of new characters since this one takes place 100 years after the spell plague. Also there are appearances of older characters such as Storm Silverhand, the Simbul, Alusair, and Vangerdahast. With Elminster's magic gone and the Simbul's ailing affliction due to Mystra's death, Elminster has to choose between saving his love, the Simbul and saving the world. Along the way, an old enemy is doing everything in his power to finally best Elminster and take Cormyr for himself. Other plotlines involve another villain who is seeking magical artifacts to further his own evil goals, the same magical artifacts Elminster needs to save the Simbul. Along the way, Elminster is discovering that he is not the mage he used to be and may need more help. Then there is Amarune a masked dancer who has her own problems and doesn't know that she is about to become a bigger part of the world. There are some other subplots involving a love interest and a young noble, but for spoiler's sakes, I will stop here.

The story moves as a quick pace and things happen quickly. It is typical Greenwood fashion and jumps around a lot. There are so many things going on that it can get a bit confusing trying to follow all the plot lines and the characters. It keeps the pace moving quickly, but breaks up the flow of the novel trying to keep everything straight. The characters are pretty much the same for the older familiar characters and the newer ones are a bit of a surprise. In this one, Elminster is more persecuted in the land of Cormyr and the War Wizards and everyone else with royal dealings wants him arrested. It is a change of pace, for if I remember correctly from all the previous novels, Elminster was well liked in the land of Cormyr.

Some criticisms:

1. Mr. Greenwood has taken to this new liking of using made up swear words that don't seem to make any sense. Words such as: stlarning, and talunin. The one I don't mind since it is closer to a familiar word is farruking. The other problem with this is he uses the word Stlarn in a sentence to refer to damn and then in the same sentence uses gods be damned. A little consistency would be nice.

2. The hesitancy to leave out more characters. It just seems that even if some of the main characters are killed off, there has to be a place to bring them back. Mr. Greenwood just seems to be attached to his main uber powerful characters to get rid of them. If it wasn't for the way Alusair's character was used and her plotline in the story, it was well done and a nice plot line, I would prefer that she were more of a passing reference for nostalgic feelings. Vangerdahast was another one that didn't need to show back up. Finally, there is a surprise appearance at the end, but I won't spoil it, but suffice it to say if the plan was to take the realms in a certain direction, this is a step backwards.

3. The fact this book really doesn't resolve much. Without being able to read the next book, the reader is left with a bunch of open plot lines and no resolution to most of the sub plots.

4. The prologue with the dopplegangers, yes, there in the post spellplague lands still. Anyway, this is the only mention of them in the whole story, so why even have it written. Maybe we will find out later in the series, but for now, it seemed to be just something to put in to start the novel but has no bearing on the story whatsoever.

Some positives:

1. The action sequences are really good. The fight scenes were really engaging and kept me reading wanting to see the outcome. At least in this book, there was no-the bad guys show up and Elminster casts a spell to wipe out everyone or whisk everyone to safety.

2. Some of the new characters were fun to read. The noble from Suzail was a fun character to read and has some really shining moments and his humor and banter with everyone was refreshing. Mr. Greenwood did add some nice new characters that were enjoyable to read.

3. Mr. Greenwood keeps an interesting air of mystery with this one. There is a new character who we don't know much about and is not much talked about keep her keeping an air of mystery and adds the feeling of wanting to know more. Unfortunately, we will have to wait for the future books to come out.

4. The fact that Elminster is no longer the all powerful wizard adds a nice complexity to the character. Every time he casts a spell, he becomes mad and can no longer control himself unless he has a magical item with him to draw from. It was a great change of pace for the character.

For me, this was an above average novel by Mr. Greenwood. I do look forward to the next novel to see how things progress. Aside from a few of the old returning characters and there is one I didn't mention and he shows up for a short appearance and doesn't add much to the story except fulfilling some neglected needs for lack of a better term, I still enjoyed it better than some of his other books. If you enjoy reading Mr. Greenwood's writing, then you won't be disappointed and if you are not a fan, you may not like this one. For realms fans, you will have to read for yourself, but I don't think you will be disappointed.

Happy reading.

Good and bad
By Stan
After reading many of Ed's books, I really should not have been surprised at the whirlwind chain of events that occurred over the last 30 or so pages. But this one was a little extreme. Way too much happens near the end and I felt as though he had a lot more to say but realized that he was limited to X number of pages, so he just started wrapping things up. Unfulfilled chaos is the best way to describe the ending. So that's the bad. The good was seeing familiar characters from pre Spell Plague again. It was also nice to see the world settled and somewhat normal again. If you enjoy reading about the Old Mage, then get this book but either read it very slowly or hold on to it till the next one comes out as the story definitely does not end in this book.

Confused and confusing
By The Reviewer Formerly Known as Kurt Johnson
Pretty much as long as there has been a Forgotten Realms campaign setting there has been an Elminster in it. In this book, an old enemy has a plan for Elminster, and for Cormyr. El himself is increasingly desperate, stealing magical items to briefly prop up the sanity of the failing Simbul. With his few remaining supporters, he needs to stand up for the Realms, and save the day. But, with Mystara gone, Elminster is a shadow of his former self, and before he can save the world he is going to need to save himself...if he even can!

OK, where do I start? I am a fan of Ed Greenwood's work, and especially of his Forgotten Realms books. This book, however, is not among his best works. The story is chaotic and confusing as the multiple characters run around, interact and sometimes die, all at a rapid clip. At times I was scratching my head trying to figure out what happened to this character or that - were they dead or just waiting in the wings? To make matters worse, the ending is a cliff hanger, leaving you waiting for the next installment of the series, and wondering what all happened and why.

Overall, I found this to be an OK book. The characters are interesting, and the action is very good. It's the story that is the clinker - confused and confusing. In a way, it won't be possible to fully appreciate this book until the series is complete, but since it's not complete this book needs to stand on its own, and it only does an OK job of doing so.

About the Author
R.A. Salvatore was born in Massachusetts in 1959. His love affair with fantasy, and with literature in general, began during his sophomore year of college when he was given a copy of J.R.R. Tolkien s The Lord of the Rings as a Christmas gift. He promptly changed his major from computer science to journalism. He received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Communications in 1981, then returned for the degree he always cherished, the Bachelor of Arts in English. He began writing seriously in 1982, penning the manuscript that would become Echoes of the Fourth Magic. His first published novel was The Crystal Shard from TSR in 1988 and he is still best known as the creator of the dark elf Drizzt, one of fantasy s most beloved characters. His novel The Silent Blade won the Origins Award, and in the fall of 1997, his letters, manuscripts, and other professional papers were donated to the R.A. Salvatore Library at his alma mater, Fitchburg State College in Fitchburg, Massachusetts.

Actually Quite Good
By Kyla
Going into Canticle, I had incredibly low expectations. I had been happily going along reading Salvatore's books about Drizzt, and occasionally checking online to see what book was next, when suddenly, there, between Siege of Darkness and Passage to Dawn I see the Cleric Quintet listed. So I was like "Oh great. Now I have to read five books about some stupid cleric. Yay."

How very wrong I was. Canticle was actually quite good. It certainly rivals many of the Drizzt books, and surpasses fair amount of them as well.

Cadderly (the Quintet's hero) is a nice change from Drizzt. Cadderly comes across as a legitimately good guy (without the hypocrisy that acompanies many fantasy heroes), and his relationship with Danica is refreshing. Unlike most romances in fantasy, there's no angsting over whether or not they love each other, they just do. Period.

The villains are somewhat stereotypical, with the whole "Let us release chaos on the world because our goddess Talona (who we don't even really seem to worship) says so", but they're still amusing, and there's a nice twist at the end.

I imagine that most of the people reading this will have read some of the Drizzt books, and are now questioning whether or not they want to read the Cleric Quintet. My suggestion is to do so. You may find yourself pleasantly surprised.

Another quality book for the Star Wars line
By Scott Owen
Comparing the Ultimate Alien Anthology to the original Alien Anthology is much like comparing a Cadillac to a LeCar. Where the original book evoked yawns with its bland artwork, uninspired layout, and strange, bipolar mix of artistic renderings and photos, the Ultimate book is eye-catching, tasteful, and most importantly, chock full of content.
Starting from the outside, this attractive book gets a BIG mark in the plus column because it's hardcover. Softcover books may be cheaper, but they get damaged too easily. And of course, like most of the recent Star Wars books, it's full-color throughout.
The book begins with a thoughtfully designed table of contents that breaks all of the topic areas into alphabetical lists. As one reads on, it becomes evident that most of the races from the Alien Anthology and the Revised Core Rulebook make a return- a few, most notably the Yuuzhan Vong, have been tweaked- and there are many new races as well. Every single race has a labeled picture, so there will be no doubt what a Chev looks like, or if the picture you're looking at is actually a Chevin. As always, the race profiles and descriptions are informative yet concise.
If this book was simply a list of races it would still be a good product, but it's the extras that really push it over the top. There are literally dozens of items of new gear (look for the Gamorrean Battle Plate!), sixteen new feats, and six new prestige classes: Aerobat, Beastwarden, Bodyguard, Changeling, Mystic Agent, and Telepath. The Big Game Hunter and Findsman are also back in revised form, for a total of eight prestige classes.
The Prestige Classes aren't truly race-specific. For example, you no longer have to be a Gand to be a Findsman (although it certainly helps)- and while an Aerobat is usually a flying character like a Geonosian, it could also work for a character wearing a jump pack. This open-ended approach is a nice touch.
Ironically, the Ultimate Alien Anthology fails to deliver in the one area that the original Alien Anthology shined: non-sentient creatures and animals. Other than a small sidebar for the Beastwarden, there is not a single creature to be found. However, I wouldn't call this a liability because it seems to be a deliberate decision on the part of the authors to keep the book focused on its topic, rather than a careless omission. Hopefully, we'll see a "Creature Anthology" at some point in the future. If you can't wait that long, then you may still find the original Alien Anthology to be useful for that purpose, but in every other way the Ultimate book is clearly superior.
In short, it's my opinion that the Ultimate Alien Anthology is everything that the original book should have been. It's a standout performer with all the style, flair, and depth of information that has been a feature of the last several Star Wars roleplaying books. Whether you are a brand new player or the most discerning GM, I'd recommend it as a solid investment for anyone playing the game.

Kel Dors, Kushibans, and Falleens...Oh, my!
By Mark Hills
So far I have just about every release of the new D20 based Star Wars role playing game from Wizards of the Coast (with the exception of the GM screen and character sheets, that is.)- I figured since it was such a welcome departure from the lousy and unheroic WEG game engine that it deserved my attention. And being a complete salivating Star Wars fanatic didn't hurt either. Now, Wizards obviously has a different publishing philosophy than West End Games does, and that's a shame. WEG had excellent source material- I always use it when designing the current campaign that I'm working on, because for the most part Wizards doesn't publish all that many books on places (Core Worlds book nothwithstanding) and things (planets, people, weapons, source books from the novels, etc.), instead the focus on guides for making characters and places, rather than provide them directly in published works.
This is a double edged sword, because given that Wizards now owns (as far as I know), all of the WEG material, it would be nice if they started releasing it after converting it to the D20 rules. Enter the Ultimate Alien Anthology- a send up to the Alien Anthology published in 2001 and gave only a handful of aliens. The Ultimate book provides almost 200 different species that PCs and GMs can use for characters. I have seen many science fiction RPGs where they only provide you have a half-dozen races to play, providing 200 seemed like a gift from the Force, and the authors really did their homework by providing aliens from not only the movies, but also the books and previous WEG publications. Each entry is laid out clearly and includes notes on personality types, physical description, homeworld, sample names, life span, favored classes, special abilities- like darkvision, species traits pluses or minuses to Strength, Dexterity, etc. and a sample species commoner type. Each grouping of races also has a height chart with very well done illustrations of each alien. The book offers such a diverse selection of aliens that it should provide even the finickiest role player enough of a choice to find something he or she likes.
There are some powers and abilities that should be examined carefully before handing them over to a PC, but for the most part the book is quite well balanced between the races. Star Wars has such a massive amount of creatures in it that a book like this was needed and my only complaint is that they left out non-sentient creatures. That is, all the monsters present in the first anthology are gone, more importantly, they got rid of the Hoojibs! Star Wars without Hoojibs is like a day without air! Seriously, I suspect Wizards will publish a Star Wars bestiary or monster manual that will include rancors, Corelian sand panthers, mynocks, gundarks and space slugs. For now the older Anthology will have to do for `monsters'. For the most part, though, the Ultimate Alien Anthology is probably the best source book Wizards has done for Star Wars to date- but I do want more books with a lot more substance than we have been getting.

The Name Says It All!
By A Customer
When one hears the words "Ultimate Alien Anthology", one expects a lot. You expect to see every alien ever seen in the movies, or read about in the books and games.
Ultimate Alien Anthology delivers. Within the pages of this book are a total of 180 alien species. This gives players plenty of options for generating a character, and it gives the GM tons of options for NPCs.
Also included in this book is a section on prestige classes. Some are left generic enough to fit several races (i.e. the Aerobat), although I felt that there should be more race-specific ones. The Findsman prestige class would have been a good example of a race-specific prestige class, but the GM can allow non-Gand characters for this class as well.
UAA also has two appendices - one for new feats, and the second for Yuuzhan Vong characters. Most of the feats are fairly unremarkable, mainly adding in some D&D feats, or improving on natural abilities.
The second appendix details how to play Yuuzhan Vong characters, including how the Vong work for each class. Add into tht a sidebar on Yuuzhan Vong gear, as well as notes on skills and feats.
Overall, the rules look adequate, although I have to wonder why Gamorreans don't have a Charisma penalty.
This book's primary weakness is its art. The quality varies throughout, and some art does not portray some races adequately, mainly due to the scale in comparison with other races. The Gand looks like he's as tall as an Ewok, and the Hutt's size appears smaller than what it actually is.
Overall, this is a good quality book. It has something for everyone, from players to GMs to non-gamer Star Wars fans who just want some info on the aliens of Star Wars.

From Library Journal
Starless Night is part of the continuing "Forgotten Realms" saga, which includes the author's best seller, The Legacy (Random Audio, 1992). Still shaken by the death of their comrade, Wolfgar, the companions, Regis, Brunor, Catibri, and Drizzt, mourn in their own ways. For Drizzt, however, sorrow turns to vengeance. Drizzt decides that he must return to the Underdark city of Menzoberranzan and see for himself that the drow do not again spread their evil on the surface world. Much like a fly who is caught in a spider's invisible web, Drizzt, too, finds himself entangled in events that he cannot control. Starless Night is good sword-and-sorcery fare and keeps a lively pace throughout. Narrator Simon Jones offers a solid performance that is occasionally marred by hokey sound effects. Those who are Dungeons and Dragons players will appreciate seeing the genre come to life. Recommended for "gamers" and listeners interested in fantasy.

About the Author
R.A. Salvatore was born in Massachusetts and still makes his home there. He has published numerous Forgotten Realms novels with Wizards of the Coast, Inc., most of which have been New York Times best-sellers. He is also known as the best-selling author of the Star Wars: Episode II Attack of the Clones novelization from Del Rey.

From AudioFile
This fantasy adventure is a sequel to The Legacy, which is set in the world of "Forgotten Realms." Narrator Jones conquers the obscure and original vocabulary of this imaginary world, making the fantasy nomenclature sound like ordinary words. He does very well with a variety of accents and full casts: young and old, good and evil, human and inhuman. The program features extensive musical support, from single instruments to full symphonic styles. The music rises and falls with the action. In the tradition of radio, extensive sound effects are used. M.G.S. (c)AudioFile, Portland, Maine

A change in pace
By angelis_90
After reading a lot of the reviews for this book, i thought i would add my own opinion of it. So far i have been a loyal fan of salvatore's. i have, in fact read every book of the drizzt series from the first to the most recent several times, and starless night, i think, is one of the best ones. salvatore places some of our favorite, non-drow characters into the drow's infamous home city. it was a nice change of setting for the reader as well as the characters, especially since i love reading about the extraordinary city of menzoberanzan. i think that drittz acted completely in character in his actions when you consider all that he has been through that led him up to this point. i see no problem with him wanting to sacrifice himself to save his loved ones, when he believs that all he has ever done was brought harm to everyone he cared for. I liked this book because it brought back some old characters from drizzt's childhood, as well as some new ones from the city. and it also put his dearest friend and greatest enemy in a dangerous, yet intriguing situation. as always, salvatore was excellent in his battle scenes and small exepected twists that turn the whole storyline around. I think this is one of the better books to the series, but will always belive that Homeland is the best yet. I agree with most people that the cover art is the worst i have seen, although the most recent books haven't been much better. You would think that someone would know how to draw an elf by now! And as to drittz's age, if you follow his age throughout all of the books, as i have done many times, you will find that he is somewhere between 60 and 70.

Wasted Potential
By Brad Smith
So, we have a book intended primarily for players to experience the planes. What do we get?

One of the cruddiest books that WotC has ever put out, that's what.

Allow me to explain...it's not ALL bad. The new weapons and magic items are nice. There are new monsters, many of which are intended to transport players through the planes. Some of the prestige classes are interesting...the Ardent Dilettante itself is VERY creative, and makes sense for what it's supposed to do. Also, the substitution levels are neat; the idea is that you can trade out a certain level of a class for an alternate version with different benefits. It's a very nice idea, and will probably be used again. After all, what rogue wouldn't want to switch out a +1 bonus to Reflex saves vs. traps to be able to sense gates and teleports within 30 feet?

However, there are things that are unpleasant to downright stupid. For example...we see the aasimar and tiefling, AGAIN. This is their third appearance (in Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting and the 3.5 Monster Manual), and this really doesn't add anything. At least the Bariaur has been altered, and is different...but still, reprints get annoying. Also, the feats, in general, are horrendously boring. I can't see any reason to take any of the feats presented.

And, last but not least, you have the Planar Touchstones. I'll admit, it was a nice idea to give people a reason to go plane-hopping. Personally, I'd think being able to fight new and different monsters and get different sorts of treasure would be reason enough, but hey. However...the idea that going to a place gives you a nifty power is kind of, um, silly. Not only that, but they waste 33 pages on this. They make more sense as web enhancements than as a list of stuff that will most likely not get used. Those 33 pages could have been used for more prestige classes, more feats, more monsters, more items, or, heck, even more description on planar cities, and would be more all-around useful. This is the what absolutely kills this book for me.

I'm not...quite...sorry I bought this, but if I could clip out the 33 pages of the touchstones and get my money back, I would. 2.5 stars, rounding up out of misplaced generosity.

The Planar Handbook is Lacking Planar Information IMO
By Michael W. Oboyle
192 pages with to many pictures (didn't bother counting this time but expect at least 10% of the book from flipping throught it) and no rear index.

12 pages of reprinted 3e material on aisimar, tieflings and other planar beings from savage species and the monster manual which should have been devoted to developing new planar beings (maybe a movanic deva, a pitfiend, a balor, a planetar or solar (for an epic progression) and a marid or dao instead of the janni reprint).

34 pages of more or less worthless material IMO devoted to planar touchstones and the planar touchstone feat. Personally I thought these pages should have been devoted to fleshing out the 3E planes with a few blurbs about highlights of visiting the planes. Pages which could have been more usefully utilized to update and expand on existing 2E planar material if nothing else.

Personally liked the City of Brass particularly since it was mostly new material. Also liked a few of the classes but trading out a level of sense trap for portal sense didn't seem balanced at all.

I wouldn't recommend purchasing it for $29.95 unless you have money to burn as it just isn't that useful even in a planar campaign.

Not for grognards.
By S. Donohue
This is the sort of book that isn't as useful if you have a whole shelf of 3.0 books or if you've already got an extensive collection of 2.0 books. I really think it's more of a player's book than some of the other books.
One annoying thing about this (and many other books) is the inclusion of new spells, feats, and prestige classes. Every book that comes out can be guaranteed to have these sections in an attempt (one assumes) to make everyone buy it to get the cool new crunchy bits.
Apart from that marketing gripe the book's content is good. Some of it is new material, some is rehash from Manual of the Planes (technically a 3.0 release). It will definitely move your campaign in new directions, particularly once your players get it in their heads they need to be a "divine somethingorother" and being trying to attract the notice of the divine.

A good bridge novel
By Andy Gray
This is the second book in the Dragonlance: Linsha Trilogy. In the first book in this trilogy we were introduced to a lot of story set up and character building.

Yet, this novel falls short of the preceding novel. I'm not really sure if I can put into words the 'why' behind that. It's not a bad book by any means, but for me Herbert set the bar fairly high and this book didn't follow through.

With that said, Iw ould still recommend this book to Dragonlance fans as it certainly progresses the story after the War of Souls.

Interesting and adventures I like this book alot.

This book is good in that it's fast paced and funny Linsha is an adventuerus not so rule book morals as some characters you read about these days. Linsha works hard and isn't perfect so she's easier to understand than charecters that always do whats right. If your perfect frankly-you're boring.

Nothing special yet for the land of Eberron...
By Andy Gray
This is the fourth Eberron book I have read and in all honesty I am really trying to give the world a chance to captivate me. Yet every novel I have read to this point seems pretty bland to me, and doesn't really offer up anything brand new that one would expect for a new world, with new creatures and magic.

When trying to decide what to rate this book I was torn between 2 and 3 stars. If I rated it bases solely on the characters it would have been a 2 for sure. The characters did nothing for me in terms of wanting me to keep reading. They are 2-D cut[out characters of what you can expect to find in countless other novels. Their dialog is sub-par for a Bassingthwaite book. In the Forgotten Realms book titled Yellow Silk, Bassingthwaite usued dialog very effectively. Yet, in this book it seemed strained and forced at times. Also, there is a 'new' language that he uses and it detracts from the book. They are kind enough to include a 'dictionary' of sorts in the back, but it's too much of a hassle to keep looking back there to understand what they are saying. It's a decent concept of adding a new language, but it's been done better and more effectively in other novels.

However, if I rated it based on the story line and plot I would have rated it higher. The actual story is a good one. There is a great deal of promise behind it. But, what truly drives a story is the characters and how they interact with the environment and quite honestly the characters killed this story.

The ending, as can be expected in the first book of a trilogy, left many things unsolved while closing off a few sub-plots.

I will probably continue to read this trilogy if nothing else to see how the story progresses and what will happen to a certain character. This is one of the few books that I have ever read that I could care less about all the characters in the book.

As far as recommendations go, I would really like to recommend this book as I think the world of eberron is very interesting and detailed, yet it may not lend itself very well to novels. If you are a fan of the first few Eberron books that have been released go ahead and get this one as you know what to expect, if you have not read any Eberron books I suggest you start with the Crimson Talisman by Adrian Cole or the City of Towers by Keith Baker before you jump into this one.

A surprisingly good read
By Aramis68
I am very reluctant to buy books based on RPG worlds, movies and the like since the books themselves have a sort of mass produced cookie cutter feel, with bland characters who are nothing more than representations of their character class and/or if you know the rules of the game, you spend the whole book trying to figure out what spell is being used, what class skill let's them do that? Not so with this book.

I picked up on a lark as I'd been out of D & D for years, right when Forgetten Realms started, due to lack of interest. Eberron's setting was interesting to me so I gave this book a shot. First, the author's writing style is praiseworthy. The descriptives are good, his vocabulary excellent and sentence style varied. I mention this to show the writer isn't some mass production hack. Second, the book involves three characters whose backgrounds are all Eberron specific, so you get a flavor for how these races and classes work in this universe. Third, the book does an excellent job giving a sense of tension as the heroes are chased relentlessly and are forced to escape rather than win every battle. Fourth, the heroes screw up and don't perform every task with perfection. Fifth, the villain(s) are well written, complex and you actually dislike them rather than being ambivalent about the outcome.

My only quibble is that two of the characters in the party hate each other from an event that happened years before during a war that shaped the current Eberron setting. I think they become allies a tad too easily, in spite of the circumstances, to really seem proper. If you've had a 7 year desire to exact revenge, I think it would be hard to put it aside so easily. I'd have liked a little more conflict between the characters from that standpoint.

Other than that, I think this book is well worth the read.

Best Eberron novel to date!
By Malarick
Well I would not listen to the first review here, as this has been the best Eberron novel to be released so far.

When I say that, I am not knocking the previous novels, as I loved Matt Forbeck's 'Marked for Death', and I thought that Keith Bakers novel 'City of Towers' was an okay novel (especially for a first time novelist).

But here we have been given something different, something a little edgier, something a little darker.

It may not be noir (on which the Eberron setting was sold to us by Wizards of the Coast upon its launch) but it is definitely good solid fantasy, and that is what Don Bassingthwaite excels at.

Don has crafted a book that is very character driven. When I say that I mean that he doesn't just give you a bunch of adventurers and run with a story. He builds each one up carefully, so that you learn to care about each ones fate. Don does not reveal the full details of each character, but also trickles the information out over the course of the story, and even by the end we are left wanting to know more.

Don also knows how to pack a punch with his action scenes, and he will make you keep turning those pages. He is also a master at pacing out his novels, and by the time you get to the end of the novel you will find you are flipping those pages like crazy.

Unlike the other reviewer, I will tell you to avoid The Crimson Talisman, as that is the worst novel in the series. Do read the others however have they have been fun to read, but for a fine tale in the Eberron setting, you will not find anything better (yet) than this!

I would also recommend that you check out some of the other Don Bassingthwaite novels, in particular the ones set in Forgotten Realms (The Yellow Silk (Fantastic), Mistress of the Night(Excellent)).

Can't wait for the next one in the series.

Great Expansion Set... FULLY COMPATABLE with Previous Minis Sets
By El Tonio
"Alliance and Empire" is the seventh expansion set for the Star Wars Miniatures game, which started with the Rebel Storm Starter set back in September, 2004 (see more about the minis game itself in my addendum below). This set was released to coincide with the 30th anniversary of Star Wars. As such, these figures have a special square bases with "Star Wars" written on the front. HOWEVER, THIS SET IS STILL FULLY COMPATIBLE WITH THE OTHER STAR WARS MINIS SETS. There are 60 different figures in this set. Each booster comes with seven durable, pre-painted minis (including one rare OR one very rare figure).

The first thing I look for in any expansion set are how many characters I recognize from the movies (vs. those that appeared only in the books). I am particularly interested in figures from the original trilogy, and I am happy to say that there are at least 40 figures from the original trilogy in this set. Most are interesting and/or more powerful variations of earlier figures (for example, Boba Fett, Lando Calrissian, Jabba, Wampa, R2-D2 with C-3PO, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Princess Leia, Chewbacca, Darth Vader, Imperial Governor Tarkin, three different versions of Han Solo, and three different versions of Luke Skywalker). But, some of the figures have never been released before (for example, Wicket the Ewok, Ewok Hang Glider, and Jawa on Ronto). Notably, there are even a few great new common and uncommon figures from the original trilogy in this set (for example, Death Star Trooper, Death Star Gunner, Rebel Commando Strike Leader, Talz Spy, and a variation of the Ewok with a bow -- rather than just melee attack).

The rest of the figures are either from the prequel, the books, or generic/minor characters (however, some of these characters are also very good -- especially for use in the Star Wars RPG).

In sum, this expansion set is excellent for those interested in the original trilogy, and fair for those interested in the prequel.

ADDENDUM: (Please note that I include this addendum at the end of all my Star Wars minis reviews, so if you've read it before, there is no need to read it again.) If you want to play the Star Wars minis game as it was designed to be played, it is best to have at least one starter (each starter comes with game instructions, a map, a D20, terrain tiles that are very helpful and add great variety to the game, and more). I like the Rebel Storm Starter the best because it's from the classic era/trilogy, but the Clone Strike and Revenge of the Sith starters from the newer movies will also work. If you don't want to invest in a starter, you can also get one of the three "Ultimate Missions" books, as each comes with a double sided map and a few smaller terrain tiles (again, I like the Rebel Strom Ultimate Missions book the best because it is also from the classic era/trilogy). Or, you can buy the "Attack on Endor" scenario pack, which comes with TWO double sided maps (in addition to a scaled AT-ST that is fully usable in play). The main point here is that you'll need some type of map/grid. If you don't want to buy a Star Wars one, generic ones are also available at most gaming stores (you can use your imagination to set the scene, or draw terrain with an erasable marker right on the grid). Of course, the minis are also useful for the roleplaying game (RPG) - in which case you may not need a starter or map, but will likely need the "Core Rulebook" instead. Finally, they are just fun to collect for those who like all things Star Wars!
