A superior fantasy novel

In R.A. Salvatore's second novel of "The Cleric Quintet" series, R.A. Salvatore brings us some his best writing outside of the Dark Elf series. Break neck pacing, intriguing plot, well done character development and growth, hilarious comedic relief, basically, everything you want in a novel, the author packed into this novel.

"In Sylvan Shadows," for me, can be counted among the few novels where I had the time and more importantly, the inclination to actually sit down and read the novel in one day as I simply, could not put this novel down.

The premise:

Castle Trinity, after suffering the loss of the chaos curse and its bid to destroy the Edificant Library, unleashes its army of monsters upon the elves of Shilmista forest. Cadderly, Danica and the Bouldershoulder brothers join forces with the elves in an epic struggle to expel these monsters and regain control of the forest...

What follows is one of the best fantasy fiction novels available. I highly recommend this novel and the rest of "The Cleric Quintet" series to fans of this genre. A note of disappointment that the publisher hasn't made this novel available for Kindle. {ssintrepid}

Another winner.

I have read the cleric quintet before but enjoyed it even more this time through. In "In Sylvan Shadows" Caderly's adventure continues taking his friends and him to the elven homeland to stop Castle Trinity's onslaught. There, action, adventure, magic, mystery, and brutality ensue. Caderly's faith in his friends and in his god is tested. It is one of my favorites.

Good, but not impressive

It is good, but not as exciting as other Salvatore's books. I don't like much how the main character was developed, especially the part of his constant struggle between what must be done and what he believes is right.

About the Author
Jonathan Block Friedman is a registered architect who has taught architecture for over 15 years. He is Professor of Architecture and Coordinator of the Design Fundamentals Program at New York Institute of Technology, responsible for over 700 students and 35 instructors on three campuses. He has also taught at the University of Kentucky and the New Jersey Institute of Technology and has been a visiting critic at Cooper Union, Columbia, and Harvard. A National Merit Scholar, he was educated at Princeton and Cambridge, studying with Kenneth Frampton, Peter Eisenman, Michael Graves, and Charles Gwathmey, and has worked for Richard Meier, among other architects. He has won a national architectural design competition and a grant from the New York State Council on The Arts and recently earned Honorable Mention in the National Space Institute's Design Competition for a proposed Earthlight Lodge Lunar Resort and National Park. He has lectured in the US, Central America, Europe, and Australia. His architecture has been exhibited at the Cooper Union and Paul Robeson Rutgers Galleries and in Israel and Japan. He has worked with both New York's Mayor Lindsay and Portola Institute, the Whole Earth Catalog group in Palo Alto. He holds several US patents and is listed in Marquis "Who's Who in Computer Graphics."

The author lives with his wife and son in Glen Cove, New York.

In the second edition of Friedman's excellent architectural guide, the writer and editors collaborate to bring much needed updates to illustrations and examples. Used widely as an artistic introduction to architecture at many of nations best accredited architectural programs, this second edition sets the stage for an excellent educational program. This second example is much easier to follow with better examples and illustrations. This guidebook is a much have addition to anyone's collection. For established architects, to students, to enthusiasts - anyone can learn a great deal about interactions between void and mass and architectural program from this text.

Best I've seen

I'm a freak for how-to books and this one is awesome. Friedman's Creation in Space is lucid and elegant. An architect friend in LA showed me her copy and I had to have my own. What I found was an updated version (second edition), with better developed exercises and accompanying illustrations. This first rate 3-D primer is a step by step design program, complete with hard-to-find but essential essays that every designer needs to have read. If you are a wannabe artist, architect, or just curious, this one is for you.

Dragonlance Chronicles - An exceptional fantasy classic!

Dragonlance Chronicles is simply stated, one of the finest fantasy trilogies ever written. As an inaugural set of novels for these two fine authors; Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman set the standard in fantasy writing in the late eighties through today. I first read this trilogy in 1987 and was astounded by its complexity of characters and the breadth of the tale; it is truly epic in proportion. I can only imagine the agony readers might've have gone through if they were reading these fine novels, as they were being released over several months. That is certainly not a problem today, as you can purchase this outstanding trilogy in one set.
You will quickly discover that the characters are highly compelling and well detailed. These two authors have woven a wonderful tapestry in these characters; you will find yourself as elated as they are in their collective victories and as heartbroken in their setbacks.
Contained within these pages are Dragonlances core characters that are quite memorable, well after you've finished this fine trilogy and as history as proven, will inspire several Dragonlance novels to follow.
Tanis Half-Elven - Who is the leader of the companions. He is torn between his love for two women.
Sturm Brightblade - Knight of Solamnia. Squire and Knight whose mission in life is to bring honor back to this stoic group of knights.
Goldmoon - Chieftan's Daughter of the Barbarian Plainsmen. Along with Riverwind, her tribal outcast lover and husband, who are both on a quest for truth.
Riverwind - Lover and later husband of Goldmoon, whose sole mission in life is to guard Goldmoon.
Raistlin - Simply stated, the most alluring character of the whole Dragonlance series. He is a Mage of astounding power and brother of Caramon. The reader will quickly find themselves asking as to which side, good or evil, Raistlin is aspiring to.
Caramon - A rather large fighter and he feels that it is his sole mission in life to protect his seemingly ungrateful brother, Raistlin.
Flint Fireforge - He is a Hill Dwarf who is in his later years. He has been friend to Tanis for quite some time and an adventurer with the other prime characters as well. This character plays quite well at times in the comedic role of stodgy old curmudgeon who is also quite protective over the companions.
Tasslehoff Burfoot - Tas, as he's referred to most of the time, is a Kender. Kender are considered to be a nuisance on Krynn, as they are immune to fear and consequently, trouble seems to follow them everywhere. Simply put, Tas is the most lovable character among the group, as his high spirits and his antics carry the story along quite well.
These characters come back together just as the Queen of Darkness is beginning her play to bring evil and darkness down upon the magical world of Krynn. You will find yourself amiably rambling along with these characters in their adventures to bring an end to this threat.
The cover art for these re-released novels is quite exceptional as well. I highly recommend this trilogy to those who've read it before and to any and all newcomers who are interested in a highly suspenseful tale, inhabited by some of the fantasy genres best characters. {ssintrepid}

AMAZING TRILOGY!!!

Definitely a great fantasy epic and one of my personal favorites, The Chronicles Trilogy- Dragons of Autumn Twilight, Dragons of Winter Night, and Dragons of Spring Dawning, brings to life the ultimate battle between Good and Evil in the World of Krynn. The books are so incredibly well written that the reader feels that they have been transported to another plane of existence and are actually present among the characters, seeing what they see, feeling what they feel, sensing what they sense. The authors Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman have truly outdone themselves and have presented us with a masterpiece of literature the likes of which we have seen only in JRR Tolkien's work and RA Salvatore's The Dark Elf and Icewind Dale trilogies. Duty, honor, bravery, magic, dragons and heroes are all about. A great trilogy indeed!

Definitive Fantasy Epic

The Dragonlance Chronicles (recommended to me by a friend) were my first foray into the world (an entire realm in itself) of fantasy literature at the bookstore several years ago. I had no clue what I was getting myself into, but I purchased the books and, being an avid reader, immediately devoured the first book in the trilogy. I must say that I was completely blown away by Ms. Weis and Mr. Hickman.
This world, these stories, and these characters are by far some of the most detailed, realistic and true to life characters- even if you have never met a dwarf. By reading the first few chapters alone, the descriptive powers of these two amazing authors make you feel like you've known the characters, their entire races' histories, and you can almost FEEL the tension in the air when the characters are in danger. A truly amazing read indeed, second only to Tolkien's works but only because Tolkien was more influential and came first.
Think elves are little midgits who make toys? Don't know your dragons from your wyverns? Well this is a great place to start learning about the wonderful world of fantasy literature. You couldn't pick a better, easier to understand, yet complex story that is ultimately about human nature's frailty and it's wavering between good and evil, yet still holding much sway in the universe. Rather disapointing novel

It took me a while to finish this book, as another reviewer said, it is boring in many places. The book suffers from several over done cliches. At first everyone and everything is just too mysterious; you have a mysterious cleric leading a boy with a mysterious artifact on a mysterious journey where they meet a mysterious peddler and are chased by a mysterious evil knight.

Later, the book suffers from the "Show me, don't tell me" syndrome. The characters continually repeat the same thing over and over just to remind the reader of certain facts.

The book also fails as a Dungeons & Dragons tie in product. First, a D&D book needs to have reconizable aspects of the game within it. If I am halfway into the book and the Cleric has not cast a single spell, something is wrong here. Secondly, the author did not do his homework where Eberron is concerned. House Orien is a human house, a half elf would not have the Mark of Passage. The creator of Eberron, Keith Baker has pointed this out.

One thing more I would point out, while this book is part of a series of books; Thw War Torn series. They are all stand alone stories with the theme of recovery from the last war. Don't let this book stop you from looking at the other books in this series.

Utter tripe!

I'm a HUGE fan of the Eberron world, and have been scarfing up all the source material and all of the novels. Most of the novels I've grabbed haven't been super, but they've been readable. Not this one.

This novel gives no attention to character development, and minimal attention to scene setting or providing a description of the world or any explanation for events. My standards for "game fiction" aren't high, but I do strongly prefer that certain basic conventions of story telling and novel writing be adhered to, and in that regard, this work sorely disappointed me. The prose was so bad I didn't even finish reading it; roughly half was all I could bear. (If you knew me, you would know what a ringing condemnation this is, because I finish reading EVERYTHING I start; this will be, I believe, only the third book I've started and not finished in my entire life).

Further, this book isn't really consistent with the Eberron world as clearly laid out by the designer in D&D rules. This I would happily forgive if it in any way approached an interesting, well-told story. "The Crimson Talisman" does not.

So, skip this one, and wait for Eberron books by authors who can actually tell stories.

Worst Eberron book?

I am a huge fan of the Eberron campaign setting for D&D so of course I wanted to read some of the novels based on the setting. While none of the novels have blown me away with their greatness, this one was far below par. The book feels like a D&D adventure that I played when I was [...]. Their seems to be no real point, just one dangerous and seemingly random situation after another. To be honest I could not even finish the book so perhaps there is some redemption at the end, but I just couldn't keep reading. If you are interested in checking out the Eberron novels I highly recommend starting with something else, perhaps Keith Baker's series or Tim Waggoner or Rich Wulf's. Any of those is a much better choice.

A Must Have for Fantasy Fans

It's not every day that you manage to pick up a book that you don't want to put down. Well, if you're searching, here's a set of 3. This is an example of one of the most superb writing styles that I have ever encountered. There is a masterful balance of action, adventure, and character/plot development that is rare to see. Typically, heavy action detracts from everything else, but not here.The characters are so well described and developed that they practically come to life.

The books take place in the Forgotten Realms, a world for Dungeons and Dragons. You don't have to be a gamer to read and enjoy this trilogy although, if you are familiar with the world, you'll have that much more description going in.

This series starts from the nitty gritty beginning with the birth of Drizzt Do'Urden, one of the most famous characters in Forgotten Realms. A drow (dark elf) by birth, he is born with strange lavender eyes and a good, moral heart that is extremely rare amongst his kin. In drow society, males are subservient to females so he is already at a disadvantage due to his gender. As the time goes by and he is exposed more and more to the evils and brutality of his kin and their evil deity, the Spider Queen Lolth, he realizes that he will never fit in with them. Eventually, he decides to leave the underground Drow city of Menzoberranzan and all of the evil that is there, much to the dismay of his family. When he figures out that his fellow Drow will never stop pursuing him, he decides to travel to the surface.

Throughout you get to really see the internal workings of Drizzt and his turmoil and struggles with his heritage as well as his desire to fit in with those on the surface that fear him for being what he is. If you enjoy fantasy, I am quite sure that once you pick this set up you won't put it down until you are done or you are in desperate need of food.

Solid Series

The Icewind Dale comics were at a local comic book store and, when I did some checking, I saw the original Dark Elf Trilogy was already done. I picked these up and read them in about a day. I have been a reader of R.A. Salvatore's for years and these are extremely true to the books. Some of the side adventures are cut, reasonably so due to space constraints, but the story is solid and there is nothing lacking.

I plan to purchase the Icewind Dale series when it is completed.

Margaret Weis is the author of numerous Dragonlance novels, many of them co-written with Tracy Hickman or Don Perrin, including her most recent New York Times best-seller, Dragons of a Vanished Moon. She is also the author of Amber and Ashes, The Soulforge, and the Star of the Guardian novels, as well as Mistress of Dragons from TOR.

Awesome BOOK

I really LOVED this book, I thought it was better than all the books besides the "Dragons Revealed" parts 1 + 2, but this story was so great and it was also so intense and greatly described. It made me feel a part of the story, like, I got naeusa at some parts and suprised at others. What I really think that will help the series though is if Kellach and Moyra both had crushes on eachother. But this book and all the other b00ks are gre@t. 5 stared

I loved this book! It is my favorite book in the whole series! One of the reasons I like this book is because it is really the only book in the series told from Kellach's point of view. All of the others are either told from Driskoll's or Moyra's point of view. It lets us know how a apprentice wizard feels when he casts spells.

Excellent addition to an already solid line

Galaxy of Intrigue is yet another solid supplement for the Star Wars Sage RPG, introducing the mechanic of skill challenges like in D&D 4e, using a series of skill rolls and roleplay to perform a task that wouldn't normally take just a single roll. In my opinion it's a great mechanic that melds dice rolling with the encouragement to roleplay your character and stress their abilities.
The usual assortment or additional species, equipment, droids, and ships are backed by a series of ready-to-run encounters, plot hooks, and campaign jump points.
Get it while you can, Wizards of the Coast has dropped the Lucasfilm license and the entire line will be out of print and off shelves before long. Ships of the Galaxy and Knights of the Old Republic are fetching upwards of $70 on Ebay!

But, as always, old enemies and new emerge from the shadows to threaten our heroes. Emboldened by a dark alliance with the deadly frost giants, an orcish horde is massing quietly, waiting with uncharacteristic patience to move against dwarves, elves, and humans alike. Meanwhile, Bruenor, sensing that his adventures will come to an end once he takes the throne, coaxes his friends back onto the road, all the while unaware of the powerful forces gathering strength by the roadside.

Salvatore is obviously in his comfort zone with his favorite characters, and fans of the series will no doubt enjoy another bloody romp into danger with Drizzt and company. He even throws in a few mind-blowing surprises for the faithful. However, newcomers to the Forgotten Realms shouldn't start here, as familiarity with Salvatore's brave companions is a necessity despite Salvatore's attempt to provide a skeletal backstory for the uninitiated. Adult/High School-Taking place in one of the settings for the Dungeons and Dragons game, this novel chronicles the attempt of Salvatore's popular hero, the dark elf Drizzt Do'Urden, and his friends to foil a plot by orcs and frost giants to terrorize the North and conquer human and dwarvish settlements there. The author breathes some new life into the stereotypical creatures of the milieu: the motivations of his villains make sense without violating the traditions of the game. His heroes face dilemmas deeper than merely how to slay their foes. The barbarian Wulfgar has to decide between his desire to stay with his family and his need to pursue his career (which, in this case, happens to be adventuring with his friends). The dwarf Bruenor has to balance personal desires with the call of responsibility. Drizzt loves the human warrior Catti-Brie and must confront the reality that the children of a dark elf and a human will face a lifetime of hostility from both races. Salvatore has long used his dark elf protagonist to reflect on issues of racial prejudice, notably in the "Dark Elf Trilogy" (Random, 1998) and this novel is no exception. The action keeps flowing, mostly in the form of fights, which are described in vivid detail. Humorous dwarves help provide some comic relief from the often-bloody combat scenes. The attraction of the "Forgotten Realms" trademark should lure readers, who will find this book better than most of its kind.

High-water mark

This arc was the high-water mark of the entire series imo. I don't want to ruin the plot for anyone, but this book and the rest of the trilogy were fantastic. Salvatore's best work (Homeland, Exile, Soujourn and the Companions Codex deserve special mention, also very good)

No easily found Kindle support for faulty DRM

Bought this book on August 30th for my Kindle, got 24% through it before DRM made delete it. It is literally unreadable and inaccessible for me, and I will be requiring a refund soon if this continues to be the case.

Somewhat slow start but a great finish

Whenever an author has written an extended series of books about the same characters, there is always inclusion of a period of introduction (or reminders) of significant events. This is mainly for new readers of the series. For those who have read the previous works, this can be tedious. Such is the case for this book. However, without being cumbersome, Salvatore managed to hit the major events in the characters' lives to illuminate some of their motivations. The problem is that there are a good many characters that require this, so it seems to take a while.
As with all of the books in this series, there are great combat action sequences. The gist of the story is that there are numerous orcs and giants uniting in the north to menace the goodly races (human, dwarf, elf). This happens as the companions are returning to Mithral Hall for Bruenor to reclaim his crown. They are diverted from this course to avenge the deaths of those early victims of the orc/giant alliance. This diversion leads the companions into significant danger, with Wulfgar acting as counselor to Catti-Brie at one point. This and the event that precipitated it give some conflict and depth to her character which persists the rest of the novel. Regis continues acting contrary to his early ways, and his inner reasons for this are discussed. Drizzt, meanwhile, is Drizzt, narrating the book through section introductions. He does not play any larger a part than the other characters, though he does shine as per his usual.
There is significant inclusion of previous Salvatore characters, not only those originally from this series, as the Dwarven brothers from the Cleric Quintet appear. New characters are also introduced, on both sides of the conflict. Salvatore manages to weave political intrigue into the mix, again on both sides, to great effect.
The climactic battle of this novel occurs in the defense of a remote village against the evil hordes. This takes a good portion of the end of the novel, but it flies past. Facing insurmountable odds, the companions battle on. Humor even finds its way into the mix before all is done.
As the title of this review indicates, I thought that the book started slow, but this was mostly due to the introductory process I noted earlier. The several segregated storylines are united in the end to a satisfying conclusion. I truly think that this book will appeal to both new and established readers of the series. And trust me, you, like me, will be dismayed that another year will pass before the next book in the series is released.
