An elaborate fantasy world come to life

Magic: the Gathering is a card game; new card sets are released every few months, often set in entirely new fantasy worlds. You don't need to know about the card game to appreciate this book, though; The Planeswalker's Guide to Alara is a guidebook, an exotic atlas for dimension-travelling magic-users who wish to visit Alara. The "purpose" of the book is to give readers a glimpse of all the concept art and world-building that went into creating this world, but the book is so well put together that it seems complete on its own. You can (and should) enjoy this book on its own merits, as a guide to an intricately developed fantasy world. But not only that; Alara itself is split into five "shards", each a unique and fully developed world on its own. This gives the storytellers the opportunity to design five elaborate societies, and it gives the artists the opportunity to visualize knights, dragons, zombies, half-metal sorcerers, goblins, giant behemoths, pirates, elves, demons...And the artwork itself is very high quality. Recommended!

The book has astounding art, great formatting, and it is all kinds of thought-provoking. Definitely something for Alara-loving Vorthoses that can be picked up and enjoyed multiple times.

Gorgeous art and solid background information

The pages and binding were of exceptionally high quality. The feel is very much like that of some exotic atlas; the book is written, as the title suggests, as a tourist's guide to an entire world. There is fantastic art on every page, with well written descriptions of the world that the art depicts. My only complaint was that at 152 pages, I didn't get all the information about the setting that I wanted, though that desire for more reflects more on the quality of those 152 pages of full sized art than on any lack of cohesion or exposition.
