Great update to an classic work!

The Unearthed Arcana is a divisive work among old school D&D enthusiasts. Some see it as a cop-out and a money grab, a step to the dark side of power gaming, or just a set of optional rules they don't prefer. If that is you, then this new premium reprint is not for you anyway. But for those of us who loved the original, and embraced the rules it proposed, this is a fantastic book to add to your collection. This book, more than any of the other premium reprints, is a must add for one reason above all others...the errata. The original Unearthed Arcana suffered from a ton of mistakes in the print. An errata sheet was printed in Dragon magazine in short order, but an errata sheet is no substitute for actual corrections. Now, with this reprint, WOTC has corrected the mistakes, and included several tables that were omitted from the original book. That makes this reprint a much more usable book at the gaming table, and a worthy investment.

In One Way Better Than the Original

I remember May of 1985 when one of my best friends bought a copy of UA to expand our D&D campaign. The magic and treasures supplemented our games. The character classes (Cavalier, Acrobat, and Barbarian) were hard to use without heavy modification (turned out too powerful, and unbalanced the game). But with modification by a talented DM, they can add some fun to the game. That said, it was a good supplement. Now it is 2013. I bought the reprint because I had never owned one of the originals. I wanted one for collecting, and for playing (I restarted playing 1st edition AD&D two years ago). As a game supplement, it still has the same value and pitfalls that I remember.
But there is one thing that has made this reprint better than the original. I remember the copy my childhood friend had in 1985. The binding of that print was horrible, and quickly fell apart. This reprint seems ALOT sturdier to me. Good value for the price.

Very high quality reprint ... still not sure how I feel about this book after all these years

First things first, the quality of this book is great. It looks fantastic inside and out and the binding is nice and tight; light years better than the original UA printing which has developed a well earned reputation as shoddily put together. My old copy fell apart after about 9 months of use back in 1987 when I picked it up.
As for the content ... well, even as a teenager we sort of knew this was a munchkin's book. The Barbarian and Cavalier classes are incredibly overpowered compared to the class options in the 1st ed. AD&D player's handbook, the rules for playing a drow first appeared here and that always inevitably led my friend to playing Drizzt knock-off, much to the chagrin of our DM. If you are still playing a 1st ed. AD&D game, hopefully your referee has enough sense to pick and choose the bits in this book that he allows in his game.
So am I happy I picked this up? Sure, there's plenty of flavor in here that can be sprinkled into any game (modern, retro, or otherwise) and even if it's just a collectible that sits on your shelf it's far superior to the original as a physical product.
