Powerful Conclusion

R.A. Salvatore here brings his superb "Dark Elf Trilogy" to a close. This novel is without a doubt the best of the series. This novel is different from "Homeland" and "Exile" in that it takes place out of the Underdark, on the surface of the world. Because of this Salvatore's writing is explored in a new way as he describes the nature and surroundings around the main character, Drizzt Do'Urden, where in the first two books of the series Salvatore's descriptions were not as used as they were in this novel.
Drizzt has reached the world beyond the Underdark, which turns out to be an interesting place for Drizzt. From the beginning of the book when Drizzt is spotted he is thought to be a villain with the intention of making the world a bad place. Drizzt is accused as the murderer of a whole family and is being chased by a ranger, Roddy McGristle. Meanwhile, the orcs are considering Drizzt a threat and are about to make war against him. While Drizzt is out in the wild of the worlds he meets Montolio (or Mooshie) who is a ranger. Montolio teaches Drizzt history and skills to survive in the world and shows Drizzt how he is really a ranger. Montolio is a great friend and advisor. Together Drizzt and Montolio battle an army of orcs. This is not the end of the story as there is much to be told by Salvatore, but I won't tell you about that; go ahead and read the book.
This book is not a clone of J.R.R. Tolkien's works as it offers an original plot and great characters. This book does, however, include many of fantasy's creatures, such as orcs, goblins, dwarves, giants, and much more. You get the idea. This didn't bother me, though, as all of the creatures took on interesting characters.
Not many trilogies in the fantasy genre have kept me as entertained, as moved, and full of wonder as R.A. Salvatore's "Dark Elf Trilogy." To get the full impact of the story that is told here I advise you to go ahead and read the first two books of this trilogy before getting on to this one. This is a fantasy novel to read over and over again.

All I can say is WOW!

I started this series a couple of years back when I picked up Homeland, book one of the series in paperback. At that point I became a Salvatore and Drizzt fan. I've read all the books up to 1000 Orcs and I can tell you this, I can't put one of his books down. They are indeed very good. Meeting the man in person was a special bonus. He is very kind and likes to put names to faces. I talked with him on and off on his message board at rasalvatore.com and when I met him and told him my handle on the board he immediately knew me. I would recommend this book and series to anyone reading fantasy or anyone wanting to start reading fantasy. You'll get hooked. I did.

A Great Fantasy Epic

This has got to be one of my all-time favorite books. If you're a big fantasy buff, and have read any other works of R.A. Salvatore, this is a must read. A lot of people really enjoyed the character Drizzt from the Icewind Dale trilogies, and this three part epic compiles everything that ever happened to him before you first met him in the earlier book. The characters beside Drizzt are amazing and dynamic, bringing their own unique touch to the story. This book is suitable for anyone over the age of ten, yet isn't a kid's novel. The world Salvatore creates in The Dark Elf Trilogies is fantastic, and quite immense also. Ranging from the delving caverns of the Underdark to the over world, the setting plays a major role in the story, just like in other fantasy books, except more so in this one. This book is loaded with detail, and the plot will be sure to keep the reader wondering what's going to happen next. Some parts may seem a bit predictable, but they aren't as important as the major events. Overall, this has got to be one of the best fantasy books I have ever read, and I personally enjoy it more than the Lord of the Rings and other epics. I definitely recommend to anyone interested in the fantasy genre to read this book, otherwise you'll be missing out on a great opportunity.

It is a lot of fun to look through. It does have a few problems in it mainly in the chart showing how fast dragons can fly, run, dig, and swim but it is still great for any fan of dragons.

A lot of Fun, but serious problems

I really liked Cory Herndon`s previous work (in Topdeck magazine, mostly)and this is quite good too. I found it funny,at some times utterly unpredictable, and overall a pretty good job. I particularly liked Geth and Lyese. Including more human characters was also a nice touch, as they`d been almost entirely left out in the previous two books and are a huge part of al three card sets.

However, I do have some problems. the first of which is the absolutely atrocious copy editing. In almost every chapter there was either a noticable speling or omission error. Often, characters genders were mixed ip as well. Also, what the character of Vektro actually was was never explained, as what Yulyn`s problem was and where he`d been the entire time. Yert was introduced with little explanation and removed just as rapidly and poorly (and in a most disgusting way, I might add). The endings (both of them, the one with Slobad, Glissa, and Geth and the one with Bruenna, Lyese, and Geth) were way too open ended.

So, read it if you liked the previous two, or Cory Herndon, or just want a mediocre fantasy story with some good dialogue.

A Great Conclusion

The Fifth Dawn (Mirrodin Cycle: Book 3)

This is the third and final book in the Mirrodin Cycle. Glissa is on the road to her final confrontation with the insane guardian of Mirrodin, Memnarch. But as Glissa travels, she makes new friends, but in the process loses several old ones. Memnarch's blind ambitions to ascend and become a planeswalker unleashes a great war on Mirrodin and only Glissa and the creatures of Mirrodin can stop the death and destruction wrought by the metalic constructs and the undead Nim. However, in the midst of the remaining survivors, there is an evil that threatens to destroy everything that the survivors have worked so hard for.

This is an excellent ending to the series. The thing that scared me the most was the bleak ending, but to adapt a line from The Holy Grail, "...it got better." I must say that for my first cycle, I am hooked and can't wait to get started on my next cycle which is the Kamigawa cycle. The only thing that need improvment is the need for a better editing staff. Way too may grammar errors in these books, but they are still enjoyable. This book is an excellent read, 10/10 for sure.

The Magic ends here....

I really enjoyed the first two books. This one- HUGE disappointment. Maybe it was just me?.. I didn't enjoy that this author kind of rewrote the rules for this book. The writing style isn't true to the first two, making it a little confusing. Little things like the change in everyone's dialect killed the credibilty I was trying to give Herndon. Maybe the only thing that kept me motivated was the urge to finish the series and it was so suspenseful ~ more action and cheesy combat cries than needed for a plot like this. I have to admit in few places the battle action was well worded and some conversations made me laugh.. But still, overall, two stars.

Good book if expensive for what you get

Overall, the book was good.

PROS
- The pages are similar in color, content and style to the Player's Handbook.
- Nice colors and illustrations
- 32 pages of content dedicated to Dragonborn, their world views, and how they fit into the current world
- New Feats, Paragon paths, an epic destiny, and magic items

CONS
- Price. For $10, I was expecting more. The book is 32 pages, the Player's Handbook at $25 is 315 pages.
- Quality of the cover. The cover is thin paper, and my copy does not feel laminated or coated. I purchased a plastic sheath to keep it in, but it is still starting to show some wear on the edges

While a lot of good stuff on Dragonborn is in the book, there is nothing you wouldn't expect after reading much of the other literature out there on them. I liked the book, but the $10 price can be hard to justify.

Worth the 10 bucks

Dragonborn were the most interesting of the new races in the PHB1, and I am glad they were selected to get this treatment first. Lots of great new fluff in this book. The only disappointing part is that out of all the new feats (and there are plenty) most of them are related to the dragonbreath power. Really a lot of overkill if you ask me. I would have like to have seen more class related feats or maybe power source (divine, martial, primal, etc) specific feats.

I assume at some point a collection of these race paperbacks will be bound in a hardback edition so if your not planning on playing Dragonborn anytime soon, it might be worth waiting.

Skinny booklet

I am a long time gamer (30yrs of D&D) and I must say that I love 4th edition (this is almost heresy amongst older gamers). Almost all the supplements have been well thought out and designed and dare I say it ... value for money.

NOT SO for the Dragonborn Supplement, I was so disappointed, it was a flimsy paper cover of 32 pages. For $10 not value for money at all, and the content was very little new material - essentially the article from Dragon Magazine fleshed out a bit. Compared to the wealth of information that they have produced for other races this is pitiful. My Dragonborn Paladin still feels a little thin in character background when compared to my mates Elven Ranger.

Beautifully produced, richly illustrated and well written, but sadly lacking in content and the paper cover is not going to last

Great read - impressive protagonist!

I almost gave this book three stars because at first I had a hard time sticking to this book. After finishing it I believe it was not because of the quality and content of the book, but more so just distractions in my real life. Anyway, that said, again after finishing I determined that this book is really good.
The ending makes up for the slower beginning - the book does drag slightly from up until the middle of the book, but not enough to get frustrated or upset at the book because it is still filled with action and interesting and surprising characters. I won't say what the surprises are but they are, for a lack of better word, interesting.
One thing I really loved about this book, especially compared to other Forgotten Realms books was the sheer quantity of races, character classes, and monster types. I had never read about many of the creatures in this book before and was pleased that this book incorporated things that are only briefly mentioned in other FR books. I will also leave those as a surprise to the reader as to not spoil the fun.
Finally, the main character, Dorn, is a beast of a man. I can't tell if I truely like him or if I just like the idea of him being this huge ugly half-golem man. He brings on the pain with his half iron body and he is just so interesting. However, I dislike his sexual tension with another of the characters just because it seems so cheesy and will be trying to make a moral point later in the series.
Finally, I believe this series will be above average overall, with stunning cover art that I heard will be able to put together to make a four part mural when lined up with the other two books and the anthology for "The Year of the Rogue Dragons."

Very Good start to this trilogy

Richard Byers was tapped for this Realms Shaking Event (RSE) trilogy. For those of you who don't know a RSE is an event told in a book or series of books that will change the Forgotten Realms for ever. Wizards of the Coast doesn't usually tell the reader's when a RSE is occuring it keeps things 'interesting'.

This trilogy of books has a very interesting premise in that the most powerful mortal creatures in the Realms, Dragons, can't control this rage that happens and they don't know when it's coming.

This is definitally and action packed book, and most likely trilogy. Byers does a very good job of helping the reader get inside the various dragon's heads and know what it 'feels' like to experience the rage. He moves between scenes effectively and with little thought of "What just happened."

However, I have one complaint with this trilogy thus far. I would have liked more information on the various types of Dragons that seem to be appearing aside from the traditional dragons. It seems like every 20-30 pages a new type of dragon emerges that I have never heard of. I am not a gamer I only read the novels set in the realms and have no idea what some of these dragons are.

Other than that this is a very well written book and sure to be an interesting trilogy.

Not very impressive.

Personally, I am not very impressed with this book.
While the story is not bad, the many fights in this book lack excitement. The main character plows through all opposition far to easily be it soldier, wizard or dragon and you don't ever get the impression that he or one of his friends are in real danger. Sure there are moments where he is described wounded or at a disadvantage but the idea that he can loose never comes up.
The evolving love story is a joke at best. The big differences between the lovers make this love very unlikely and the speed of which the one started to love the other makes the disbelieve complete. Also there is no reason given why this love (as unlikely as it is) happens, making it material for a bad soap opera at best.
My biggest complain is that, as I have said above, that the dragon fights are to easy. The whole story of this trilogy is about the danger the dragon can pose to the continent, but when you read the battles against dragons in this book it seems that a pair of enraged dragons are only a small inconvenience which can be disposed by any band of soldiers.
A fight against a dragon should be a titanic struggle only the best should be able to survive, but in this book every run-of-the-mill swordsman seems to be able to kill a dragon without much danger.
The only redeeming factor is that the author stays very close to the rpg material. I was able to identify nearly all spell used in this book and I haven't found anything which could not be created with the published rpg material.
But for non-gamers and people who don't watch for such things, that is no help.
