A little perspective
By John Casiello
First things first - for those of you rating this based on comparisons to starter sets for other RPGs, please consider this: if you have enough knowledge of/experience with other RPG starter sets to make this comparison, you are not the target audience for this starter set! Please download the free D&D Basic PDF and consider purchasing the 5e core books (Player's Handbook, Monster Manual, Dungeon Master's Guide) when they are released over the coming months. As someone who has been playing D&D and other tabletop games for over 20 years, I am clearly not part of the target audience for this product -- although I did purchase a copy it to get the included adventure, and for the dice which I have given to my three-year-old to add to her collection so that she'll be well-equipped once she's old enough to start gaming.
My rating is based solely on how well WOTC achieved their goal for this starter: to make an affordable, accessible entry product for people who are new to D&D (and, if new to D&D, most likely new to pen-and-paper RPGs in general). Note that this also means that my rating does not necessarily reflect my opinion of the 5e rules themselves -- again, I am looking only at the contents of this starter set and its ability to deliver what it proposes to do.
On the first count, I doubt few would argue that the retail price falls outside the "affordable" range, and I would even go as far as to say that it becomes downright cheap if you purchase it at Amazon's price. Furthermore, rather than providing a short intro adventure and then thrusting fledgling DMs out into the wide world of designing their own adventures before they've had a chance to experience their first TPK (total-party-kill), the included adventure has enough content to take characters up to 5th level - several sessions' worth of gaming at least, even gaining experience at a breakneck pace and gaining a level per game session. I have not read the adventure thoroughly enough yet to fairly evaluate it, but even if it is of only middling quality, it would by itself be worth the price of admission for veteran DMs (who could also extrapolate upon the contents of the adventure and flesh them out into a larger campaign that takes players beyond 5th level).
As far as being accessible (by which I mean the ease by which a new player can understand the game and start playing by reading the included materials), let me first say that playing RPGs is a hobby that is best learned from and passed on by people who are already engaged in the hobby. However, for those not fortunate enough to learn the game from friends or family, the contents of this starter set will do a yeoman's job of helping new players learn the game. The essential rules of gameplay for both players and DMs are included, and players can move on to the D&D Basic game (available as a free PDF) or the full version of the game as the three core rulebooks become available. While D&D Basic and the full game have more content (rules for advancing beyond 5th level, more classes, spells and monsters, along with optional rules for DMs to incorporate into their campaigns), the contents of the starter set will provide many hours of gaming on their own.
Admittedly, the contents aren't flashy, but besides helping keep the price of this thing way down, the simplicity is part of the point: you've got your rules, your characters, your adventure, and your dice -- boom! Now just get your friends together and you're ready to play (ok, better get some pencils first too). Miniatures, poster maps, dungeon tiles, etc., are all great and can really enhance the game when used appropriately. Note the key word here "appropriately" -- that is, miniatures and the rest can and do enhance the game when used properly (like the right blend and amount of spices on your favorite dish), but the true focus of a tabletop RPG should be the story and the game. Including optional accessories in the starter (yes, minis and a battle map are optional in this edition) would obfuscate the point that D&D does not require any of these things in order to be fun. By including only the bare essentials in this starter, Wizards is subtly but clearly communicating to players that D&D is a game about using your imagination and the shared interaction that takes place between the players, the DM, and the game world.
Thanks, Wizards, for creating a product that will help bring the wonder and joy of RPGs to a new generation of players! (And please feel free to contact me for the details of where to mail the check (;-)
Finally, a bit of friendly advice for the new players out there: think carefully about your chosen course of action if you ever hear the DM ask, "Are you sure?"

A great introduction to the new Dungeons and Dragons
By Michael Parker
A couple of years ago, Wizards of the Coast set out to create a new edition of Dungeons and Dragons. One that could bring together fans of all previous editions, whom after 30 years of rules updates and changes had become quite the splintered bunch, all of them loving the same hobby but so settled into their own preferred version of the game that they couldn't even play with one another. And so began a 2-year-long free public play test. The goal was to get feedback from as many players as possible and create a game that truly captured the essence of D&D, with the hopes of reuniting the D&D tribe. So now, after all of the play test packets and surveys and forums, here we are. This Starter Set is the first official product to result from all of that effort on the part of the game designers and the public. So the 2 questions on everyone's mind are 1) How is the new D&D system? and 2) How is the Starter Set as a product?
Well, now that I've had the chance to read over the Starter Set materials, I'll add my two cents. As far as the new system goes, I think it's pretty darn good...flexible and not overly complicated, but also not lacking in rules and charts and all of that other fun stuff D&D players like. For those who are claiming that the rules don't feel different enough - from 2nd edition or 3rd edition or Pathfinder or whatever - well, that's the point. It's supposed to feel like Dungeons and Dragons to players of all previous editions. There isn't supposed to be a huge learning curve if you've already played D&D before. And that's a good thing. And yet, there's also just enough new stuff to make this new edition feel exciting as well. The advantage/disadvantage rules, the refined skill list, the less dramatic, more gritty level progression, the unique mechanics of each class. All great, exciting, fun stuff.
Now, as far as the product itself goes, I have to give the Starter Set five stars as well. Yes the two booklets are lacking card stock covers and they're bound by staples, but they are made of super high quality paper that really shows off the art and the layout. The rule book explains the game very well, and the adventure, from what I can see, is deep and engaging. And it has all been produced at a price that didn't have my wife raising her eyebrow in my direction (that will come with the hardback books, I'm sure). Basically you get the new rules, the adventure, the characters, the dice, and the (very handy) box for less than you'd pay for a single episode of a Pathfinder Adventure Path (96 pages, list price $22.99). Not a bad deal. As for those complaining that the set isn't flashy enough - that there aren't any player or monster tokens provided, that there aren't any battle maps included, that the character sheets don't have pictures of the characters - this is another intentional move. With this Starter Set, Wizards is bucking the trends established by 4th edition D&D and Pathfinder, and taking D&D in a different direction, one that emphasizes the simplicity of getting together with some friends, keeping some notes about one's character on a scratch pad and leaving the rest up to the imagination. I think it's a brave move in this day and age, and I have to give Wizards credit for that. And, of course, those who enjoy all of the supplementary products have nothing to worry about. There is already a set of miniatures out there that corresponds with the pre-made characters in the Starter Set Dungeons and Dragons Miniatures: Icons of the Realms Starter Set And as the years pass, we can expect all manner of shiny new products, including battle mats, spell cards, and a lot more miniatures.
Anyway, speaking as a somewhat experienced gamer who played Advanced D&D back in the day, and recently got back into D&D with 4th Edition, I can say that I'm very pleased with the Starter Set and this new direction for the game. I've been able to quickly familiarize myself with the new system and I'm super excited to get a gaming group together and roll some dice.

Good introduction: great gift, good start
By John S.
Considering the low price, this is a good deal. It could be better, but it's still good idea. As a long-time player since 1st edition, I remember buying the old Basic red box in the the early 80s and learning from that. So I have nostalgia for that idea of someone buying this as their first intro to D&D. This mostly fits that bill.
Edition Itself: I've been playing this with my game group and love the 5th edition rules. They are more streamlined than previous editions, but still offer flexibility. I liked 1st and 4th editions, but now I think this edition has won me over as being the best. So if someone is interested in D&D, I would easily tell them to start here. It's as streamlined as the rules can get without getting in the way of a good time.
Rules: The printed rules are mostly high-level but at least provide a list of spells. But it basically is everything you need to get started. I think this is where I wish WotC should've added a printed version of the 100+ page rules book available for free on their web site. The rules and adventure in this box are decent for getting started, but they could've added a little more bang for the buck by adding that other rule book. I wish they would put that in a future edition. (But it's always available for free for everyone. So it's out there. And it's not needed at all for this.)
Adventure: The adventure included is quite long and worth the purchase. It'll keep your party busy for many sessions (which may be 30+ hours total). So it fits the bill for being standard enough for new players to get a feel for D&D, but with rich interactions that flex social abilities, communication, spells, many character skills, and combat in creative ways. It has the nice, glossy artwork, charts, and maps to make it fun to read and easy to follow. Nice work on this.
Characters: It's a pretty good set of characters. I just wish they had a little graphical splash to them to make a player feel like "I want to play this" versus "hey here's a set of stats". I like how Encounters has those graphical cards with stats on them that just shout, "cool". But the sheets fit the bill. Everything is one them, and they are sturdier paper stock to be used several times.
Dice & Box: You get a sturdy, attractive box with this, and some nice dice to start you out. It reminds me of the red box days of Basic where you have everything you need to get started from scratch. The splashy artwork is nice, and the box is large enough to carry all your future stuff and printouts.
Overall, it's a nice set at a cheap price: dice, character sheets, a rule book, and a good adventure all in an attractive box. At the cheap Amazon price, you can't pass up on this if curious about the game or giving it as a gift. It's as cheap as a movie/book but will offer a lifetime of adventure.
