Boring. I bought the audio book. Basically a collection of short stories. The main characters never developed. It wasn't like the other DragonLance books. This is the only one of DragonLance books that I don't want to read over and over.

About the Author
Margaret Weis is the author of numerous Dragonlance novels, many of them co-written with Tracy Hickman. She is also the author of the Star of the Guardian novels and co-authored with Don Perrin the novels Robot Blues, Knights of the Black Earth, Brothers in Arms, The Doom Brigade, Draconian Measures, and Hung Out.

Tracy Hickman, in addition to his work on the Dragonlance line, has co-authored with Margaret Weis the Darksword series and the Death Gate Cycle. He is the designer of the game setting Starshield and is the author of the futuristic novel The Immortals.

An Unexpected Surprise

First off let me say I've always been apprehensive on reading any Dragonlance novels. Generally I consider myself somewhat of a Highbrow Fantasy snob, e.g. George R.R. Martin, Tolkien, Donaldson, etc., and hence, I figured these books were just lowbrow trash. Well, I was really wrong. Let me get something straight here, I'm not comparing these novels to any of the works of the above-referenced authors; however, these novels, each around 600 pages long, were enjoyable, fast-paced, great stories, and kept me hooked. I drove through all 3 novels in 2 short weeks. I enjoyed them so much I've now started at the beginning of the Dragonlance series, Chronicles, and while I've completed the first novel in that series (which I didn't enjoy quite as much as these 3), I'm hooked right now on the Dragonlance world.

Give them a try. You won't be disappointed.

Mixed Feelings

The show must move on, if it is to continue. I'm not certain it needed to. The Dragonlance Chronicles Trilogy Gift Set, while flawed, were a great story. The Legends Gift Set: Time of the Twins, War of the Twins, and Test of the Twins (Dragonlance: Legends Trilogy) was even better. This effort fell flat, and even turned continuity on its head.

The entire plot is based on a what-if scenario: what if Tasslehoff Burrfoot (herien referred to as Tas) didn't die? At the end of the Chaos war, Tas decides he needs to be present at Caramon Majere's funeral. Using an artifact, he travels forward in time, disrupting everything.

Now, if the Chaos War were lost, that would mean that Chaos won, and everything and everyone went caput. There's no way around that. But that's just what the authors decided to do: ignore the consequences of their book, Dragons of Summer Flame Dragons of Summer Flame.

That didn't sit well. But there were other problems:

We became attached to the original cast in Chronicles as they interacted with one another. They faced danger as a group. They grew, they quarrelled, forgave, cursed and watched eachothers' backs. This trilogy isn't like that. Each of the characters we're introduced to, and expected to care about, faces everything on their own, right up until the very end.

Another issue I had a problem with was the the antagonist. A teenage girl who appears completely honest and blunt throughout, but when it suited the purpose of the story, acted subtley, maliciously, and in a backstabbing manner. Then too, how she could be so attached to Goldmoon, and yet fall so completely for the 'One God.' Her last act seemed so out of character, it took me completely out of the story.

This set was heavily bloated. More happened in the Dragons of Summer Flame, a single book, than occurred in this entire trilogy.

It was nice to see some of the old characters again, even if they were on their way out. It's a shame we never really got to know Palin or Usha, who are still rather flat. The major groups acted consistently with their established history. Even when everything changes in the end, alot remained the same. Meh. This was one tale the Dragonlance universe could have done without. It leaves the world of Krynn with alot less good and evil. The very things that made DragonLance tick.

(And how many times does the fate of Raistlin need to be changed, people?)

Great Product

Great product that was delivered in record time. I was totally amazed at how fast it got shipped to me. Dragon Lance books are great reads. If you're ready for an adventure that sucks you into the character then these books are for you. Dragon Lance books have a huge selection of books to choose from and most of them tie together in storyline at one point or another. You get the feeling of an ever-expanding storyline. I recommend these books to readers of all levels.

Ruminations from an Aging DM

I remember when the Dungeon Master's Guide (DMG) 1st hit the open market. I was 17...it was a long awaited book.

For Wizards of the Coast to bring back the 1st edition core books of Advanced D&D is a great moment. To do this in honor of its creator the late E. Gary Gygax (E.G.G.) is amazing and much appreciated.

The Dungeon Master's Guide is very high quality. It is well bound and will last far longer then the original publications from the 70's and 80's. It is simply a quality product. The original DMG was the first book of the core books in the series that I bought...It is simply amazing to hold a newly printed copy of this grand ole book in my hands once again.

If you used to play the game...back in the day; thumbing through these pages are a welcome stroll down memory lane. It will not disappoint.

Beautiful packaging, very poor editing

I was really looking forward to this release. I've played AD&D since the first books were published, and D&D before that - as one might imagine, my books were a bit beat-up.

Sadly, although the books have beautiful binding, lovely gold-trimmed pages, built-in bookmarks and all that lovely packaging, the content flat-out does not measure up.

There are literally dozens, if not hundreds, of typos in the "premium" re-prints. These are errors that were *not* in the original publications. Some of these errors would impact game-play enormously (in the MM, Dwarves have a base of *seven* hit dice!).

Overall, these re-prints were a gigantic disappointment. If you have not already blown your money on them, don't. Go out to a used bookstore site and find a gently-used copy of the original printing instead.

Great follow up to book 1

The Road to Death is the second in the Lost Mark Trilogy written by Matt Forbeck, the first book is Marked for Death. It needs to be said that the reader needs to read Marked for Death before they attempt this book, or else several things will not mesh. People who regularly read my reviews (not sure how many there are) will remember that I gave the first book a less than stellar review. I still feel the review I gave the first book was well earned, however, this book I absolutely loved! I must say this is the first Eberron book that I have loved. I am eagerly looking forward to December of 2006 when The Queen of Death, the third book in this trilogy, will be released.

This book is both character driven and plot driven. The mix is almost perfect between the two. There is a strong plot element to this novel and one that seems to carry the characters along for the ride. This book fixes the plot problems that I saw with the first book. Mainly the repetitive nature of the plot in Espre getting kidnapped and lost over and over again. This book reveals a much broader brush in which the story is taking place. The motivations of some of the characters are beginning to come through. There is also a twist or two to make sure the reader is paying attention.. As with most books, there is an `end battle' in this one. However, it's not the typical hack `n slash battle which is over and done with. It's a `real' battle that takes time and cunning to survive. Well written.

The character development in this book explodes from the first one. In the first book the characters seemed one dimensional to me. In this book there was so much more about each of the main characters. In fact one of the main `bad guys' from the first book, Te'oma, Forbeck made me care about her, where as the firs book I could have cared less. My only thing about the characters is I would have liked to read a little more about Burch, but hopefully that comes to in the final book. The rest of the character development was stellar.

As I said before, I feel this is the best Eberron book I have red to date. Thus far I have had mixed reviews about the Eberron world, but this book makes me want to keep reading to find the gems that will surface.

I am not a role player in any sense of the imagination, and I think that may be one of the down sides to the Eberron novels. I don't care about gaming rules, stats, and all that. I care about being entertained when I read, that's exactly what this novel did. I would recommend this to people who are curious about the Eberron world and what the novels can bring to the table. Role players will certainly like this book. A definite must read for fantasy fans. Well done Mr. Forbeck!

Surprisingly Satisfying Second Novel!

I say in the title of this review that the novel was surprising satisfying, but I should say that I was hoping, nay expecting, this to be a good book, and Matt Forbeck did not dissapoint.

I gave the first novel a 5 star rating, as one of the first Eberron books to come out it got me hooked on the setting. If I could I would give this novel 6 stars.

This book picks up immediately where the last one left off, and is pretty much action all the way. There is a nice part in the middle where everyone gets to come up for a breather, and then we are back into the thick of it again.

It is the last third of the book that did it for me though, with the introduction of an ancient Dwarven stronghold, being the lair of a rather nasty Dragon. Also the action really kicks into 6th gear, and gives you a powerful dramatic ending.

I think that the characters certainly developed more in this book, and Matt Forbeck wasn't restrained as much as he was in the first one (when he had to introduce us to a rather large cast).

The first book ended on quite a cliffhanger, whereas this one rounds off quite nicely, setting up the final novel in this series. The book does raise quite a few questions, which I will pondering over and will only be answered when the final novel, The Queen of Death, is released later this year!

I certainly hope that Matt goes onto to provide us with more wonderful characters outside of this trilogy, in the Eberron setting, as he has a solid grasp of the world.

Builds on excitement of Book 1

I really enjoyed the first book of the trilogy, and this one didn't let me down. Building on the "chase" from the first book, Road to Death returns all the favorite characters and adds several more. It also continues to introduce readers to the peoples and places of Eberron and drops little tidbits of history that make me hope other countries and cultures are explored in future books.

Forbeck's style of ending most chapters with a cliff-hanger situation keeps me from putting the book down.

I recommend this very highly for anyone who enjoyed the first book in the trilogy and also for those who like Forgotten Realms or DragonLance novels.

Great Send Off for Saga Edition

I think this is one of the best books from the saga edition. The whole book tied together then end of WotC's contract nicely. They threw in rules for making your own races and monsters. They tried to put in enough for you to continue to keep the game fresh, even with a lack of new books coming out. Definitely a must have for any Saga Gamemaster.

Very helpful for creating interesting add ons for the roleplaying Saga Edition. So far, seems to be very helpful. Only one drawback, and I have found this for the Saga Edition, in general. Trying to come up with a good Challenge level for complex characters/beasts/adventures is not addressed adequately in any of the manuals.

A great addition to the RPG. Too bad it's the last book in this incarnation of the game. There is some great info in here, mostly what you'd expect: new races, weapons, planets, etc. We've all created our own worlds for Star Wars, but this is a good way to not have to do the work. My major complaint is it is too short. But then I say that about all the books. I wish they could all be a hundred million pages with everything about everything. But, alas, it would be not a good thing to have to lug around. This has actually impressed me more than some of the other books in the set (and I own every single one). Not that they are bad, they do well for what their slant is, but some have seemed a little tossed together. This one seems well thought out and put together. it gives some easy ideas for your adventures if you want to get off "the beaten path" in your game. I can see this getting heavy rotation in my campaign.

Silver Dragon Codex

My son loves dragons and this book series! I started reading them to become better informed about what my children read and I must admit that, while a bit below the average adult's level, this series of books can be very interesting to follow. A person can pick up any of the books and read them separately. They don't have to start with the first book or else become "lost" like other book series. Sometimes the characters in the books will cross characters from other books in this series. I think that it's a great way of connecting the books without forcing someone to buy every single book in the series in order to "catch up". But if you like dragons, then you will want to read all of these books.

Weakest of the Dragon books, but still fun

Silver Dragon Codex

The weakest entry into the YA series Dragon Codices, "The Silver Dragon" follows a small circus. Jace the young high wire acrobat must help Belen, the beautiful dancer find a way to acquit herself of the charges being brought by a white robed mage from Palanthas. Surely the beautiful young girl cannot actually be a silver dragon in disguise... and even if she was she couldn't possibly be an EVIL silver dragon who destroyed a whole town can she?

Jace, Belen and a few others from the circus head off to determine the truth behind the story. Along the way they are confronted by werewolves, a chimera and the truth turns out to be far more complicated then they first thought.

I say this is the weakest entry so far because the other Codices are well thought out and all of the varying story lines are wrapped up neatly by the end. I find this to be important in a YA novel. Silver Dragon leaves many things unexplained, and also suffers from random bouts of weak writing. For example: when introducing a character they state that he only speaks a few words of their language and never uses the word "I" however on the very same page he uses the word "I" three separate times. I also found this book to be a bit darker then the others and for some reason it came across a bit dull. Perhaps it is because the characters are less likeable then the ones in previous novels, or perhaps the plot became overly complicated in a very short stretch of time. Either way, although this was an okay book, it is no where near as good as the Bronze or Green Dragon Codices.

An enjoyable read.

I guess that I'm on a dragon kick lately, so I started here. I liked the characters and the plot. It was a little too short for my tastes but it IS a kids book. Actually, if this was longer and written to the sensibilities of the pg-13 crowd, I would have loved it. I'll probably be checking out the rest of the series that's on the Kindle. I think that says it all really.
