Final book in a great saga

The Chaos curse is the final book in a 5 book series, all of which are great. Cadderly and friends must face an evil in which they never thought they would have to face. They must fight together, facing new enemies, as well as old. This is a great series, and some of these characters make an appearence in Salvatore's other books containing Drizzt. I recommend these books to anyone into fantasy, or if you are just a fan of Salvatore, this book, as well as the others in the series, are a must! The ending of this book is a little sad, so be forewarned, but if you read the later books containing Drizzt, everything comes out to be alright.

This whole series has been a new and amazing idea for me. It delves into the world of priests, unlike all of the other R.A.Salvatore themes. The Chaos Curse is a must have for all R.A.Salvatore readers.

Okay conclusion to interesting series

... there are some interesting elements here. As hinted at in some of the previous novels of the series, Cadderly has something a reformer attitude. He believes his order has strayed away from its tenets and that it is too consumed with ritual and dusty tomes rather than helping people etc... Cadderly's religious order is headed up by Dean Thobiscus who, in Cadderly's view, personifies the ritualistic and power politics that have corrupted the order. This conflict had potential to be developed more, but this did not happen.
There was one improvement over the previous book in the series. Cadderly finally faces a foe that he finds difficult to combat. Obviously, I don't want to reveal who this last villain is but it was reasonably done. There is also some genuine risk involved here as Cadderly's lover, Danica, is captured. Where is the setting for this confrontation? The Edificant Library which has been overcome by the forces of darkness. Also, he faces an important choice near the end; to follow the calling of his God completely or continue his relationship with Danica.

More iconic D&D figures

This release comes only two months after the release of the base D&D Miniature set called Harbinger. The total figure count for Dragoneye is a bit lower at 60 (Harbinger has 80), so it's a bit easier to collect a whole set. Each box typically has 4 commons, 3 uncommons and 1 rare. I think the total numbers are 20 rares, 24 uncommons and 16 commons, but I'm not 100% positive.
This set introduces Dragons to the D&D Miniature line. You have 5 regular dragons (Red, Brass (might be Bronze), Black, White and Blue), several Half-Dragons (Gold Champion and Silver Sorcerer), Dragon Samurai (Samurai that pattern themselves after a Dragon, in this case Red and Copper) and a few Draconian from the Dragonlance series. The larger dragons and half-dragons are rare, the smaller white dragon, blue dragon, samurai and Kapak Draconian are uncommon, and the Baaz draconian is common.
While Harbinger had a lot of Orcs, this set has Goblinoids -- two goblins, a hobgoblin and a bugbear miniature are all common in this set. There are more Drow and Orcs to expand the group you can get in Harbinger. One surprise is that there are no undead figures in this set, which is probably a good thing considering the large number of undead in Harbinger.
The overall figures have improved from Harbinger. The Black Dragon is wonderful, the Red Dragon is very imposing for a Large figure, and many of the uncommons look better than the rares of the prior set. There are still some poor figures; the new kobold isn't nearly as detailed as the Harbinger set, the Goblin Skirmisher looks a bit like a pole-vaulting leprechaun, the white dragon sometimes looks like it was painted with a vial of white-out, and the Abyssal Maw has been described elsewhere as the Absymal Maw.
I still think it's a good buy. The D&D Statistic cards and prepainted nature can really save time for a busy DM. I've only played the Skirmish game a handful of times, but it seems to be a fast version of a D&D combat. The point costs seem mostly balanced, but I really don't have enough experience to fully judge it.
With nearly a full set of both Dragoneye and Harbinger, I've been forced to buy a tacklebox to carry around the figures -- it's a great way to transport them. (You don't have to worry about bending them out of shape like a metal miniature collection -- a nice bonus for the DM on the go! :) ) I don't think these figures replace metal miniatures, but I do think they augment them -- prepainted hordes fight against your well-painted PCs.
I'm already looking forward to the next set.

Getting better with each release

The Dragoneye Expansion is a great addition to the D&D world.

This set introduces Dragons to the D&D minaitures Game.

I found the sculpts and paint jobs to be superior to those in the earlier Harbinger release and this as sign of good thing to come.

I don't love random packaging, but it dose have it's advantages, and I've learned to live with it.

It allows retailers to carry the product with less fear of less popular models colecting dust and costing them money.

It allows for singluar packaging design, and random allotment on the maufacturing end.

It allows the Customer to get 8 FULLY PAINTED plastic miniatures for the price of 2-3 of their unpainted, unassembled, metal counterparts.

Also since plastic is cheaper than tin/pewter the figures tend to be larger and more robustly sculpted.

Personally the convenience of them being prepainted alone is incentive enough for me.

Painting miniatures is a hobby in itself and not one we all have the time to indulge in. It comes down to getting 7 attractive painted figures or 2-3 I'll never get around to painting myslef.

It's worth noting that the miniatures come with dual stat cards for each figure. D&D Miniatures skirmish rules and D$D 3.5 stats on the other side.

The cards are valuable enough that they could be a product by themselves and their value should not be understated.

Excellent accesory for D&D games

One thing I've always disliked about miniture games is the building process... fun in small quantities, but when you want to get a large quantity together, built, painted, etc....it becomes discouraging. These figured are not only pre-painted they are also plastic molded (much lighter and easier to store without damaging them) and designed for use in all D20 games. They also include a card with both the "official" mass-combat rules and a complete set of stats for use in Dungeons and Dragons (including spells, equipment, magical items...even a challenge rating).
Downside--$10 for 8 figures that you can't pick out before hand. Still cheaper than most figure sets, but it still works enough for me to buy several boxes (I've got two Red and three Brass dragons already).
I recommend it for D&D gamers. Wargamers only if you don't mind buying a ton of boxes to get what you want.

A solid reference at last

Wotc is notorious for padding their books because let's face it, in the last year or so, Wotc has released more hardcovers than every book printed for the entire 1st edition. While each of these books contains patches of solid, if not essential material, one can't help but think Wotc could have compressed all this info into fewer volumes.

Could have, but that's not the nature of capitalism, now is it?

Quibbling aside, this is one volume that dispels the notion of padding and then some. Not since the Player's Handbook has any single book been so essential to the game. Sure, prestige classes are nice, but we dump 90% of them into the garbage and wonder why we bought the book in the first place.

But that's not the case with spells.

Spells rule the world of D&D. There's a spell for every occasion and players can never have enough at their disposal. In the past, if you wanted that choice spell to fight the lich you needed to have the right book handy, a book you most likely carried about simply for that four sentence spell description. Well, now you have more than a thousand at your beck and call and the cumbersome Complete series, not to mention the Bovd and Libris Mortis, can just stay at home.

Let me just say this book is solid, well constructed, and lays out everything you'll want to have for a spellcaster (unless perhaps you're a warlock). The only drawbacks are that the original sources are not referenced and there is no index or table of contents for the spells themselves. The former seemed like a bad idea at first, but now we have a host of new core spells to play with, spells that can't be thrown out because they originated in the Forgotten Realms or other campaign settings. The latter problem of no index is solved simply by looking at the spellcaster tables at the back, which doubles as the index, anyway.

This is the first book I have bought from Wizards in more than a year that I feel wholly satisfied about. It's nice to see a solid compilation that lightens my tote-bag and introduces new material at the same time.

If you are carrying more than two books for spells-itsgood

The spell compendium is the latest book from WOC.

This book contains spells from the following; the complete series, Draconomicon, Liber Mortis, Magic of Faerun, Manuel of the planes, Miniatures Handbook, Planar handbook, Players Guide to Faerun, Savage Species, and the Underdark. There are spells from the Dragon,and from the wizards website.

The book includes divine and arcane spells from all of these sources. It also includes the new domain spells and granted powers for them. All the spells according to the book are updated to 3.5.

My only complaints are that the spells dont have an indication from which source they came from. Its a small complaint but it would have been nice. The second complaint is the renaming of many of the spells. Aganazzars scorcher is now scorch, bigbys slapping hand is just slapping hand, harmony is now inspirational boost. Im not sure why and didnt think it was necessary.

Like I said in the title, if you are carrying two or more of the books to your games, its worth it.

Many but not all spells, in a great but not perfect book

This is a wonderful book for Wizard characters wanting to expand their spellbook, Sorcerer characters wanting to find effective spells to learn, and Cleric and Druid characters wanting access to additional spells to pray for. It also includes spells for less common classes such as Assassin. Not all DM's allow their players to use spells from supplements, but if they do, this is one book you don't want to do without.

The Spell Compendium does not contain every spell ever published. For example, it doesn't contain spells from newer books, such as Player's Handbook II and Complete Mage. Since this book is a supplement, it also doesn't contain the spells from the standard Player's Handbook. Hence, as a Wizard player, I still find myself needing to carrying four separate books to gaming sessions to have full information on the spells I can cast. I'd like to see a Spell Compendium II, that has the newer sources as well as Player's Handbook spells all in one volume.

Some spells have been renamed or changed in behavior. For example, Greater Mage Armor no longer has a material component, even though you had to pay 25 gold each time you cast it in Complete Arcane, the book that originally introduced this spell. Since the Spell Compendium is the newer book with hopefully more errata and balance, DM's should probably rule that spells have the newer behavior.

I have noticed several typos in the book, which is unfortunate. But they're usually pretty obvious and won't interfere with proper use of the material.

Good book for beginning teachers

Ordered this book for a teaching assessment class... there is not much content to learn from but a lot of reproducible tests. I imagine it will be very useful when starting my classroom next fall.

Full of errors

I was using this as a class text and quickly discovered numerous errors in the instructor's manual. It makes me wonder what kind of editors the authors once (if ever) were. This should be an easy fix. I've contacted the textbook company but no representative will contact me. If they'd pay me $1 for every mistake I found I'd make some nice change.

Not up to WOTC standards

I am a big fan of WOTC dungeon tiles, owning at least one of every set. However, this latest offering is a bit of a disappointment. It is frankly pretty difficult to build much variety of workable terrain with this set. You can build a snowy plain, a nice winter farm setting, or one snow-filled large cave, and that's about it. You cannot build for example, glacial rifts, snowy mountains, or large ice cave complexes. So just make sure your desired setting is one of the above before you invest.

I tried to recreate the frost goblin ambush setting from Dungeon #159, and it would take at least three or more likely four sets to build a reasonable depiction of that battlefield. So don't think on too grand a scale (unless you can afford to buy multiple sets).

A few details, some good, some bad:

- There is a transition tile from snowy terrain to paved dungeon, but the color is off and doesn't match the rest of the snow terrain. Irritating.
- There are some nice 1x1 and 2x2 tiles of ice outcroppings, ice sculptures, and even an ice throne. On the reverse of each is a pile of shattered ice shards for when they get damaged in combat. A nice touch.
- The cavern wall tiles don't extend the wall to the corner vertex of the tile, so the walls never line up nicely.
- There is not a good transition tile from snow cave to normal cave, except for one tile that shows an underground stream flowing out of a snowbank. Have fun

Good tiles, obviously limited use

Not very versatile for the most part, at least most tiles in this set aren't - but as it is a specific-use set for cold regions, this should be expected. Good artwork for sure, same good quality materials used as well.

Beautiful but a bit flimsy

It's pretty great, it's beautiful and it's got scenes like no other, but the tiles just aren't as resistent as the ones from the master set. I recommend NOT punching out the tiles, but taking them out with a razorblade or something like that because the edges ripped a bit on many ocasions.

If you own the orginal stay away

The only reason I am rating this so high is because I am not deriving its value in comparison to the original but instead I am deriving the value of this publishing as if it were not a reprint.
Now with that being stated, internally you can expect this book to be the same as the original in terms of content.The production value of this books, however, is fantastic. The cover is both aesthetically and tactilely pleasing, to an extreme degree. This may be due to the age of my original copy but even the pages seems to be a higher quality, they feel thicker and the gloss is much more alluring. The art within the book is amazing and there is a lot of it, however this is the same case as the original publishing.
Now to the subject of the functionality of the book, if you find your players bringing multiple books to the table just for the spells contained within this book will be of great help. It doesn't contain every spell in the 3.5 universe but it does contain a good percentage of all the spells my players use. Not by design but just by chance.
All in all, if you don't care about how your book looks, (which personally I do it really adds to DM'ing for me) pick up a used copy of the original. This books is well made and worth the price in my opinion.

Group Loves Me For This Purchase

I would recommend this book to anybody still playing D&D 3.0 or 3.5 and probably to anyone playing Pathfinder. It is a wonderful guide to hundreds, perhaps thousands, of spells that were gathered from everywhere but the original player's handbook. My group adores this book, and while having more than one in a single group will likely just prove redundant, it would be helpful if you have three or four spell casters at once. Every DM or Pathfinder GM should take a long and serious look at buying this book. The print and artwork is beautiful and of extremely high quality as well.

Awesome addition to the series

THE LEGACY marks the first of four volumes in the LEGACY OF THE DROW series, or book 7 of the entire saga. Salvatore does not disappoint fans in this one--there's tons of action, thrilling suspense, mystery and even a bit of romance! As with the first three books, THE LEGACY focuses heavily on Drizzt's heritage and his spiteful kin remaining in the Underdark. There are several loose ends at the conclusion of this novel, I suggest you keep STARLESS NIGHT handy so you can dig right in when you finish this one! Excellent story, excellent writing! "A+"

Once again, Nothing beats a leatherbound book

The qualities I enjoyed about this book are the same as those of its predecessor, the Special Edition Player's Handbook.

If you love the look and feel of a well-made leather-bound book, then this book is for you. In fact, it is ONLY for you, as you have no reason to buy it if you otherwise have the 3.5 DMG. And that is a good thing. It was nice that, as with the Special Edition PHB, they incorporated the erratta, but that was already available online. With no new content, this is no money-sop for Wizards. This is just an extra choice in the marketplace for those who love books, love the game, and want to have a book that can take years of heavy thumbing as a reference work that a rulesbook requires.

Like the Special PHB, some may complain about the pages sticking together initially due to the gilded edges, but I think that is a boon. They unstick easily enough the first time you open them and you can quickly separate them all with a quick spin past your thumb. I like it because it tells me that I'm the very first person to open the pages of the book. (And they don't make a papercut hazard as someone fretted about with the PHB - in fact, the silver gilded edges make the paper thicker on the ends, making a paper cut less likely). It also makes the book have a stiffer, more substantial feel as you flip through the pages, as if it were an older tome rather than a modern book.

The blue cloth bookmark, as contrasted to the red one with the Special PHB, was a nice touch. It helps identify the books, which look at a glance to be very similar when they are lying on the tabletop. When one is stacked on top of the other, the red and blue cloths make a nice contrast and there is almost an artistic beauty to seeing the books together that way.

This is a well constructed book that is sure to last a long time and I love having it under my fingertips with each game.

I'd love to see a few other of the more heavily-used Wizards books given this treatment - like perhaps the Monster Manual (to make the core books complete) and something like the Spell Comependium.

I am most pleased with this book. The faux leather cover is just so cool, and it's so nice to have all but the most recent errata corrected in the book already. I didn't mind having to separate each page when I first got it -- as someone else said, it just proves you really are the first person to open the book.

D&D 3.5 is all about choices. Fans of older versions might not like it for various reasons, but that's ok. 3.5 has been designed with the next generation in mind -- it's simple, straight-forward, and endlessly customizable (thus giving it much broader appeal than previous versions). If you prefer the more restrictive and sometimes confusing rules of the older versions, don't play this game. You can still find older edition stuff secondhand.

My only real complaint is with the quality of WOTC's illustrations. They just aren't as good as the ones from 2nd edition. Those were truly reflective of 'epic fantasy', especially the full-page pics ... but the 3.5 pics are all fairly cartoonish, and some are downright silly. My guess is that WOTC couldn't afford to employ TSR's artists.
(As a side note, the Amazon.com image of the cover really doesn't do it justice. This book is actually black with silver -- the image here makes it look rather bland and grey.)

If you're like me and don't want to have to pencil in all the changes to the rules, get this copy. It's cheap enough here at Amazon. Otherwise, go for the regular version of the DMG. Maybe WOTC will release the SE printing in a regular cover soon like they did with the player's handbook.

A handsome reissue: black leatherette, silver edging core rule guide

Blend the updates into your DND game and become a better Dungeon master with this handbook, which helps newcomers grow into Masters and helps those with background to improve. From the foundations of DND, from styles and playing to using rules, handling nonplaying characters, creating campaigns, handling magic items and more, each chapter comes packed with DND management tips, encounter levels, instructions and tables and charts. Power levels, ability scores, teams and player directions pack rules which are meant to keep DND vital and moving. A 'must' for any would-be Dungeon Master.
