This scar on my arm is the mark of the thin man's sword...

These on my chest, the barbarian's gyrspike...

This, on my shoulder, the woodman's axe.

And this rasping whisper, all that is left of my voice, it is the scar of the Lord Singer's jealousy.

They took my voice and my life and left my body for the crows. But not all who die rest in peace.

Staking his claim to the Realms
By Andy Gray
Ghostwalker is Erik Scott de Bie's first foray into the Forgotten Realms with a full length novel, and the second book in the stand alone series titled The Fighters. His first official writing was a short story published earlier in 2005 in the anthology Realms of the Dragon II.

My first inclination was to try to compare Mr. de Bie with some of the current fantasy authors on the shelves today; however, I will not do so as I think that is unfair to him. One novel does not a writer make, and I think he should be allowed to make his own path in the genre. This is just what he did with this novel.

To start, this book is darker than most Forgotten Realms books. In fact I may even say it has pushed the envelope of Wizards of the Coast's policy to keep books under the PG-13 rating. This novel is right at the cusp of that rating in my opinion.

From the opening scene to the last scene of the book de Bie dares you to try and put the book down. The frantic pace of this novel is such that every page must be read, and read now. There is very little down time. Unlike some novels out there today where authors add fluff to make the book longer, de Bie makes sure that everyone of his words means something and has an end goal in mind.

The plot is well thought out and well constructed. The main driving force behind this novel is a gritty tale of vengeance and what someone will go through to get tat revenge. There are also a few subplot sprinkled throughout the story, but if I was to talk about them here they would turn into spoilers - so I will pass. I will say the subplots add to the novels overall appeal and adds to the intrigue of this book. Mr. de Bie also does a very good job at giving the reader just enough information to let them think they know what is going on, then snatching it away and replacing it with something different than first thought shocking the reader. I have read too many fantasy novels that have a very linear plot, this book certainly does not follow that path. I liken this plot between a good murder/mystery and a playoff hockey game. Action packed pace that makes you think along the way.

Being a new author I was unsure just how much consideration Mr. de Bie would have for character development in this novel. I was not disappointed in the least. The character development in this novel is fantastic. From the start to the finish of this novel, de Bie never lets character development take a back seat. Several characters have such large developments that merely saying it never took a back seat does not seem to do it justice, yet if I explained there would be spoilers- so I am forced to leave it at that.

Those of you that read a lot of my reviews know I try to end each review with either recommending the book or not. I am very pleased to have had a chance to read this book so I recommend it without hesitation. If you are new to the Forgotten Realms setting you can read this and not feel lost in the least. If you are a long-time reader of the Realms Mr. de Bie throws out some very good lines to keep you grounded and creates a chuckle every now and then. I would recommend this book to anyone and everyone who want to read a fast paced tale of intrigue and revenge.

Clint Eastwood meets Lord of the Rings
By Scott Masterton
Ghostwalker is a great first novel for any writer. Erik Scott de Bie slips adroitly into the Forgotten Realms world while managing to bring his own particular brand of writing to the title.

If one were to imagine Clint Eastwood in his "Man-with-no-name" role as a main character in a Twilight Zone directed by Peter Jackson and add fight choreographer Yuen Woo-ping you'd get the feel for this novel. Ghostwalker is a brooding, tale of revenge that could easily take place in the old west, but happens to take place in the fantasy world of Forgotten Realms. The main character, Ghostwalker, is a damaged, amoral you man bent on revenge. As a boy he is brutally beaten and almost murdered by a group of local men ala "Hang 'em High". He survives to exact revenge on this same group as a grown man.

The action is vividly written, the dialogue tight and characters solid and believable. Hopefully this novel will be given a chance by those that have not been followers of the Forgotten Realms books. This little book adds a grittyness to fantasy that very few save George Martin have been able to do.

Move over Salvatore!
By Malarick
Watch out Salvatore there is a new kid on the block and his name is DeBie!

Ghostwalker is, simply put, a breath of fresh air. It is a novel that breaks the boundaries of D&D novels, and feels comfortable in doing so. This is not a book about a group of adventurers getting together to defeat a foe, or find a magical artifact, this is a good old fashioned down and dirty tale of revenge.

Erik Scott DeBie tells a tale of intrigue. He enjoys throwing in little clues here and there, but keeps enough back to really surprise you later on in the book. There were more twists and turns towards the end of this book than in a sack full of snakes!

The tale is very gritty, and dark just the way I like it.

Set in frontier logging town, a not so well known area of the forgotten realms, and DeBie uses all the information available about this place and crams it into his story.

Saying that, I do not think you would have to be a fan, at all, of the Forgotten Realms to enjoy this story

His characters are extremely well crafted. Some of them you really start to care about, and others make you want to run a sword through them yourself.

I mentioned Salvatore at the start of this review, and I did that because DeBie has done what Salvatore has been doing for years, in terms of combat writing, but at the same time putting on his own stamp and making each fight interesting and unique. Whereas I would start to get bored reading a fight in a Drizzt based novel, here I was enoying every moment. Now lets see if he can do that after as many books as Salvatore. If he can, he will be a forced to be reckoned with in the fantasy genre.

I am looking forward to Erik's next novel - The Depths of Madness, which is due out in 2007. In the meantime we can enjoy a short story from him in the Forgotten Realms anthology - Realms of Elves, which comes out Feb 2006.

I haven't seen a supplement this good in years...
By Leighland Feinman
The only thing that I could say is a drawback of Heroes of Horror is that it's too short.

This book was clearly written by people who know how to do Horror; some of the examples that they give had my pulse going up, and they're just suggestions!

The main thing that I really like about this book is that the writers took many, many examples from pop culture and related them to their suggestions, breaking them down to core themes and explaining how those themes can be related to each other. It provides the important basics of horror writing (for short stories, scripts, or an RPG) without going into horrible technical terms because the writers knew they were writing to an audience that aren't pro writers. It's this down to earth, no-nonsense explanatory style that really makes Heroes of Horror a winner for a DM looking to add horror flavour to their campaign, or to write an entirely horror-based campaign.

From a rules standpoint, this is how it breaks down:

A lot of the material has been seen in 3.0 materials, and so it's really nice to see these things updated for 3.5.

The classes and prestige classes are really quite useful as well- the Archivist is a brilliant adaptation of Divine casting, and the Dread Necromancer is long overdue; a base-class necromancer was needed in this game. The spells and feats sections are also rather good, so overall the book is a great opportunity.

I was considering a four-star rating because of its shortness, but I then reread the sections on horror writing and it just so outshines other sourcebooks that it deserves the five-star rating.

Most importantly, it doesn't take the need for Horror in your campaign to use this sourcebook. This is really a guidebook to making your villains epically and cinematically *evil*, and any DM can use that to good effect. The supernatural evil effects might be creepy for a horror setting, but any DM can use the tips in this book to make his or her normal villains much more sinister and chilling.

A Pleasant Surprise
By Miss M
I honestly wasn't expecting too much from this book when I originally looked at it. I was expecting the caliber of the not-so-"Complete" series... Boy, did that get shot in the foot. This is probably one of the best supplements released in the past three years. It's very comprehensive with very little useless, extraneous information and is organized well. The sections written to be helpful to the DM are actually helpful to the DM- not just a bunch of 'no duh,' common sense information like many of the other new supplements.

The new classes are actually interesting- not merely spinoffs or mixes of other classes, and the Taint tables offer a really interesting new idea. The new creatures are also very intriguing, again, not just spinoffs. Take the Grey Jester: a humanoid that basically eats the laughter and happiness out of peoples (and PCs) to create mindless drones to do its bidding. There is also a little speckling of possible mini-adventures that help you get an idea of how to employ the concepts introduced into a campaign. While the book is really designed for a horror-oriented campaign, it would be very easy to adapt some of these ideas into a brief adventure, even just one dungeon. Pages and pages aren't wasted on new magic items or overly extensive info on adaptation into Ebberon, Faerun, etc. There's just the right about of info on both.

It would be worth the money for a one-shot Halloween adventure. It's very original, very creative, and a great buy. It would be a perfect match for anyone intending to run a Ravenloft campaign.

From Publishers Weekly
At the start of bestseller Salvatore's second book in his Tolkienesque fantasy trilogy (after 2002's The Thousand Orcs), hordes of orcs, led by cruel King Obould Many-Arrows, sweep down mechanically and unexcitingly on beleaguered dwarves. When he isn't slaying orcs, the story's hero, the dark elf drow loner Drizzt Do'Urden, suffers guilt for allowing a friendly elf to die in his stead and is attracted to Catti-brie, a beautiful human woman who is the ward of the dying dwarf king, Bruenor Battlehammer. The usual fantasy suspects-gnomes, trolls, elves, flying horses, unicorns, giants-crowd the pages, but the author does at times rise above cliche, and a few characters do achieve some complexity. Obould actually speaks of economics, while an elf, Innovindel, having lost her mate in battle, talks pensively of the centuries of her life, in contrast to the paltry few years of human life. This difference is significant to Drizzt, because Catti-brie is only human. Fans will eagerly await further developments in volume three.

As Salvatore's readers mature, so should the storylines
By R. A. Allison
To summarize my review before I get into it: R.A. Salvatore's Drizzt-books have evolved into Saturday morning cartoons rather than staying as the Tolkein-esque stories they first started out to be.
I have been a Salvatore-Drizzt-book reader ever since 1990 when I read The Crystal Shard. I have read every Drizzt-book since then, but with this last book I have decided to give up the series until some drastic changes are made. Instead of an exhaustive review of this book, I'll just point to 6 ways as to how this entire series is on its death-bed. Salvatore can cure these maladies by listening to the following:
1.) DRIZZT AND HIS FRIENDS HAVE BECOME SATURDAY MORNING CARTOON CHARACTERS - In cartoons the main characters never die, they are invincible, they are unflawed. In The Drizzt books, no main character can ever die. They fight hundreds and hundreds of "bad guys," only to score perfect victories each time. If it seems that one of the main character has died, or will, it's only a red herring that sets you up for that character to inevitably "save the day."
2.) DRIZZT'S ENEMIES HAVE TURNED INTO THE "VILLAIN OF THE WEEK VARIETIES" - In cartoons, the heros are usually pitted by a different villian each week. The villians are rarely fleshed-out, and they're just around for the purpose of getting killed by Drizzt and Co. If a villian is fleshed-out, Salvatore becomes attached and cannot kill him, only send him away (Artemis Entreri, Jarlaxle, etc).
3.) SUPPORTING CHARACTERS ARE LIKE THE "YOMAN" CHARACTER FROM STAR TREK - Remember in Star Trek how Captain Kirk would beam down to a planet with some unnamed officer, and inevitably, the unnamed officer would die while Kirk would be unharmed? Okay, now substitute "Captain Kirk" with "Drizzt" and you have Salvatore's new books. A seasoned reader knows that when a character is introduced, he's not likely to be a permanent fixture.
4.) YOU CAN'T GO 2 PAGES WITHOUT BEING REMINDED THAT DRIZZT & CO. ARE THE TOUGHEST, BADDEST CHARACTERS IN THE WORLD - It's not that you see this through their actions, but Salvatore spells it out for you before every fight. Hypothetical example: "The orcs were heavily armed and outnumbered the weakened drow twenty five to one. But this was Drizzt Do-Urden, and he was no ordinary drow!" Please ...
5.) SALVATORE'S EDITORS NEED TO BACK OFF OF HIM AND LET HIM WRITE - if you've noticed in the past several books, Salvatore paces the story nicely, then has to suddenly end the story because the editors limit the number of pages he can have. When you get 4/5s the way through it, you think "wow, I'm almost finished, and there's so much left! Hell, (enter character's name) isn't even within a 10-day ride from the others?!" ANSWER: Robillard the mage shows up and magically teleports the character wherever they need to go.
6.) THE FIGHT SCENES ARE A BIT TOO DETAILED - Everyone knows Drizzt is a bad mutha-sucka, but when Salvatore gets carried away and writes, "Drizzt then shifted his balance to the right and pivoted low with a perfect center of gravity, slicing his left scimitar right, then feinting back, swinging his left scimitar in a downward arc, pulling back, then upward pivoting to his right, bringing his swords at a downward V-angle, parrying each blow, then rolling to his left, followed by an inverted cone flip to the front, slicing diagnally with his left right-ended scimitar...." I just find myself skimming paragraphs.
MY SUGGESTION FOR SALVATORE & DRIZZT:
-------------------------------------
Set the next series some 100 years into the future. Drizzt, as an elf, will continue to live for several more centuries. Cattie-Brie, Wulfgar, Regis and Bruenor will not. Go ahead and jump forward and write the novel that you wanted to with THE LONE DROW. It's time for Drizzt to move on.
I think Salvatore knows that. He toys with the ideas of Drizzt and Cattie-brie's grim future, but I don't think he has the nerve to actually kill anyone off. So just jump to the future and make it happen.
And get rid of those annoying dwarf brothers! They are the Jar Jar Binks of the Drizzt world. I would welcome any feedback from Salvatore fans. I still am one, but I feel like I'm watching a good thing go down the tubes.
Be critical, people. Don't just throw praise at a book because teh main character is cool and has potential. I can tell by the writing style of the majority of these reviewers that they are somewhere between 10-16 years old. That's how old I was when I read The Crystal Shard. I want to feel the same way about these new books as I did when I was that age reading the early adventures. I've matured, so now must the Drizzt storyline.

Time to do something
By Tankertoad
I have read every published work I know of by Salvatore. I read the Icewind Dale series (still the best by him) starting in '88. I really began to like Salvatore because, unlike most fantasy at that time, he wrote long, descriptive combat. But now, Salvatore has become a cash cow for various folks, and his early unheard of success (if not in fantasy in general, D&D type fantasy in specific) in the fanatasy market has been milked dry. So many of us read Salvatore out of loyalty, and too many of us give great ratings and buy the books brand new when they simply aren't that good. I still have the last book of that awful DemonWars Saga only partially read.
The Lone Drow is _OK_. But it isn't great by a long shot. And the poster who wrote a list of improvements for Salvatore was correct in many spots of the list. The Lone Drow is one of the better Salvatore books in more recent times. I really think Mr. Salvatore needs to finish his contract requirements and go offline for a while and JUST WRITE. See what he can do. Forget the marketing, the rules, the formulas. The publishers like the formulas because they get about $25x3 out of us. Most of these series can easily be combined into one book.
My rant is complete. I hope my long term favorite fantasy author can get something fresh going. No more Tarzan or Star Wars and no more milking. Just some good, epic, fantasy.

One of the best.
By T. Harris
The Lone Drow was one of the best Drizzt books out there. The writting style of Salvatore is amazin' and the character interaction and emotion put into the characters is beyond words.
The book starts right off where the first book in the trilogy, "The Thousand Orcs," leaves off. Drizzt left alone with the thoughts of his friends dead and his scimitars hungry for vengance! The Dwarves, along with Wulfgar and Catti-Brie, fighting for their lives and for their home aganist the unrelenting orcs. Every page was wonderful and never filled with a dull moment between the two main storylines. And the characters were spectacular. Some of the highlights were: (can't write them all because there were just to many) The obvious one is Drizzt and his tale. Salvatore was able to take Drizzt back to the days of the hunter and his life in the underdark. And The emotional baggage Drizzt was carrying and the amazin' detailed action scenes were spectacular.
The next hightlight was the other main storyline, Dwarves vs, Orcs, LET'S GET IT ON! All the character in this battle and around it were just some much fun to read. Salvatore is not only the master of the Drow society, but the master of the Dwarves society as well.
Many characters in the,"Thousand Orcs," (or in other Drizzt books) annoyed me, but in the, "Lone Drow," they shined. The characters sure as Tarathiel, Innovindil, Pikel, and Pwent. the two elves interaction with Driztt and what happen in this brought out the elf characters. The interaction between Drizzt and Innovindil was a great way for Salvatore to go, showing Drizzt a life he never had or never really thought about (can't wait to see what happens).
The last and final highlight came from the character Obloud Many-arrows. I liked this character in the thousands orcs, but I loved this character in this book. the image Salvatore painted in my head of Obloud was beyond words, well no, one word came to mind, Badass!
"Lone Drow," is one of the best Drizzt books I have read, fill with action, drama, and twists and turns all weaving around one other. the characters are some much fun to read about and it's not a hard read either. The writing style and the flow of the book is very smooth and there is not one dull moment. If you want a book about Dwarves, Drow, Orcs, and many other races, a book filled with action, drama, and unforgettable characters, a book with an awesome storyline, "The Lone Drow, " is for you. But you have to read all the other Drizzt books first....you must, for they are great! All Hail Drizzt Do'Urden and R.A. Salvatore!
One more thing, the ending was awesome!

THE KNIGHTS SOLVE A MYSTERY
By Tim Janson
Wizards of the Coast is best known as the makers of the enormously popular Magic: The Gathering collectible card game, Dungeons & Dragons role-playing game, and their related lines of fiction and home to top fantasy authors R.A. Salvatore and Margaret Weis. In 2004, however, Wizards decided to move into the realm of juvenile and teen fiction with the announcement of their Mirrorstone imprint. For the first two series under the Mirrorstone banner, they decided to stick with two subjects that they know very well: Dragonlance and Dungeons & Dragons.

Knights of the Silver Dragon is a Dungeons and Dragons series aimed at readers 8 - 12 years in age. The stories center upon the exploits of three young heroes in the town of Curston. Kellach, is a teenaged apprentice to the town's most powerful wizard, Zendric. Kellach's brother, Driskoll, is an adventurous 12 year old who dreams of becoming a great warrior like his father Torin, the captain of the Curston's town watch. The brothers are joined by their friend Moyra, a young female thief and daughter to one of Curston's most well known thieves, Breddo.

Taking place shortly after the events in the first book, "Secret of the Spiritkeeper", book two, "Riddle in Stone" begins with the town of Curston having their annual Promise Festival, a celebration of Curston's glory days and the townspeople are enjoying fun, games and food. Kellach and Driskoll walk about the town square sampling various treats from the many vendors selling their goods. The Promise Festival includes a tradition of gift-giving and Driskoll receives a new sword from his father, Torin. Kellach is anxious to receive his Promise gift from Zendric. But underneath the celebration there is a foreboding air in Curston. Watchers (Curston's city guard) have gone missing and the town even dedicated a statue to one young female watcher.

The Boys join up with Moyra to go to the city Prison where her father Breddo is to be released but her father is NOT himself. He appears to be drugged and is mumbling incoherently about something he saw in the lowest depths of the prison. They hope to get some help from Zendric but when they pay him a visit, they overhear a suspicious conversation between Zendric and a mysterious, cloaked woman and fear that Zendric may be in on an evil plot. Soon, most of the town's watch, including Captain Torin, have come under the influence of this mind-altering drug. Kellach, Driskoll, and Moyra learn that the drug can be used to control minds and discover that the mysterious woman is actual one of the terrible Medusa's, whose look can turn anyone to stone. At great risk, the trip uses a secret sewer entrance into the city prison to try and unravel the mystery. They soon discover a series of riddles etched into several stone statues and make the horrifying discovery that these statues are victims of the Medusa. Kellach finds an unlikely ally in a small, mechanical, but intelligent dragon that gives Kellach the ability to see through its eyes and understand the strange runes on the statues. The brave trio of young heroes are now the only ones who can save Curston.

"Riddle in Stone" has a decidedly different feel than the first book in the series. It is less action-oriented and more a mystery requiring the solution of complex riddles. Riddle-solving has always been an important element in playing Dungeons & Dragons, adding depth to games instead of making them mere hack-n-slash adventures. Author Ree Soesbee constructed a clever who-done-it fantasy mystery that keeps readers guessing right up until the climax. Kellach, Driskoll, and Moyra all show off their resourcefulness in this story. Kellach uses his last available spell...a levitation spell...to escape from a group of bandits. Moyra calls upon all of her young thievery skills to avoid several deadly traps and Driskoll displays his courage in sacrificing himself so Kellach and Moyra can escape. Soesbee also did a good job in maintaining consistency with the various personalities and traits of the various characters. That's something that's not always easy to do when different writers handle the same characters.

Emily Fiegenshuh again provides both the book cover artwork along with several interior illustrations which have a distinct, although subtle, Japanese Anime influence to them. Each of the books in the series check in right around 180 pages with short chapters that average 6 - 10 pages in length. This is very important I think as it's much more fulfilling to put a book down for the night at the end of a chapter rather than in the middle. Short chapters make it more motivating to read, especially for younger children. Knights of the Silver Dragon has so far produced two very strong adventures which not only are fun to read, but also display admirable qualities about cooperation, teamwork, courage, and resourcefulness. These are books that any fan of Dungeons & Dragons or fantasy in general will enjoy no matter what their age.

Highly recommended!

great beach read for the kids
By Julie Failla Earhart
The second book in the Knights of the Silver Dragon is written by Ree Soesbee. The Promise

Festival is in high gear, celebrating the bygone glory days of Curston. A new statue is about to

be dedicated in the Main Square. It's in the artists likeness, a former watcher, only she has been

missing for two weeks. Kellach and Driskoll hare having a lot of fun when their good friend,

Moyra, asks the boys to help her escort her soon-to-be-released-from-prison father back home.

Not that she needs their help. She doesn't. Moyra is quite a capable little gal. But she did

promise her mother that she wouldn't go alone. Many of the watchers and villagers were

disappearing and there are far too many for it to be a coincidence. But when they arrive at the

prison, Moyra's father, Braddo, is acting funny.

And now that they've noticed it, many of the watchers are acting rather strange too. Like

something has altered their brains and making them do things they normally wouldn't. They go

to Zendric, the great wizard, with their concern. But he has a visitor whom the little trio doesn't

recognize, and Zendric refuses to identify the mystery guest. Kellach doesn't like secrets and

starts a mission to discover the identity of the stranger.

The inn were they think that the visitor is lodging only for it fo be consumed by fire. They spot

three men chasing a hooded figure. Sure that the fleeing form is Zendric's guest, the three begin

to follow, only to wind up being chased through the streets and into a warehouse. This begins a

tale. To solve the mystery of the watchers weirdness and to identify the stranger at Zendric's, the

little band must first detect and decipher a riddle that begins on the edges of the newly dedicated statue.

This second book is as much fun as the first. However, Soesbee's

rendition of the characters makes them appear much less mature than first author Matt Forbeck

described. It was also a tad disconcerting when the three used twenty-first century language (like

"totally" and "weird") in an era that is definitely not modern.

Not as good
By michael
I loved the first book in the Knights of the Silver Dragon series, so I quickly ordered the second one. But this one did not have nearly the same amount of excitement and D&D-esque sense of adventure from the first book. I don't think I'll be getting the third one.

Amazon.com Review
Prolific and popular writer Paul Theroux turns himself on his ear in My Other Life, the "story of a life I could have lived had things been different," as told by another Paul Theroux. The book, arranged in sections that resemble stories more than chapters, traces a life that at times looks quite a bit like Theroux's real one; at other times not at all. He treads the familiar ground of his Peace Corps days in Africa that some readers will recall from My Secret History. The story then careens through Singapore, London, marriage, writing, family, and divorce. And it is not only Theroux who is a walking contradiction in this work; other characters explore the notion of two lives, giving the sections a unifying subject and a resounding theme.

From Publishers Weekly
Theroux has previously played with the identity of a novel's protagonist (in My Secret History), but this time his work is considerably more personal and entertaining, if less profound. It is in effect a fictionalized memoir in which the stages of his life are tellingly illuminated by what amount to a succession of brilliant short stories. Certain themes recur throughout: the narrator is constantly about to be seduced by determined but unsuitable women from whom he retreats at the last moment; he is always reminding himself of the fragile but oddly intimate relationship between writer and reader; and he bears an agonizing sense of exile from an everyday, quietly satisfying domestic existence he seems to cherish but can never attain (hence his compulsive travels). The line between fiction and reminiscence is deliberately and skillfully blurred, so that such choice episodes as a disastrous dinner party held to introduce Anthony Burgess to a lifelong fan, and another (for which Theroux crosses the Atlantic specially) that stars a very convincing Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip, are at once triumphs of comic realism and of dark fantasy. Did he really meet an obscure German writer whose life and work seemed exactly to parallel his own? An Australian reporter he had once dismissed with a slighting line in a book, only to find she was a more seasoned and knowledgeable traveler than he? A seductive murderess in a remote Yorkshire coastal cottage? A louche London socialite who transformed Theroux's career before moving on, rapaciously, to another young writer victim? It doesn't matter. The book is so vividly compelling?and melancholy?as to remind a reader once more of how hugely talented?though, alas, sometimes uneven?a writer Theroux can be. First serial to the New Yorker and Granta; BOMC selection; author tour.

From Library Journal
Expatriate novelist and travel writer Theroux (Pillar of Hercules, LJ 9/15/95) takes stock of his life at mid-point in a loosely connected series of reminiscences covering his youth in Medford, Massachusetts, Peace Corps work in Africa, teaching in Singapore, and the momentous decision to settle permanently in England. Although he agonizes over the recent breakup of his marriage, Theroux's wife and children are mostly invisible. He grudgingly admits that the divorce may have been precipitated by his extended absences, but he never examines his wanderlust and disingenuously portrays himself as a dedicated homebody. The narrator of this book certainly resembles the famous writer of the same name, but in an introductory note Theroux insists that this is an imaginary memoir, a "what if" fantasy. Everything is fictional, including the vivid portraits of Anthony Burgess, Queen Elizabeth, and murderer Nathan Leopold. This is autobiography in the postmodern mode, very much like Jerry Kosinski's outrageous Hermit of Sixty Ninth Street (Kensington, 1991). True or not, Theroux's anecdotes are compulsively readable. For most fiction collections.

Theroux's Finest Work--in ANY medium
By A Customer
*My Other Life* is a unique and brilliantly executed masterpiece that defies genre classification, and is, for me, Paul Theroux's best work and greatest book, superior to his earlier *My Secret History*. The writing is fluid and tight, the stories poignant, sad, and hilarious--and while people often criticize Theroux for being self-indulgent or even monomaniacal, the human insights found in the present volume are as powerful as they are because of the narrator's simultaneous involvement and detachment, which provide for wonderful character sketches and evocative descriptions, the likes of which the author himself has never executed better.
More than with any other book I've ever read, including those by Paul Theroux, this book absolutely defies classification: it is at once a novel (as it's billed), a work of creative nonfiction, a memoir/autobiography, a "travel" book, a collection of vignettes, of essays, of connected short stories, and a work of literary criticism. Theroux is very prolific and has written in all of these mediums, but *My Other Life* manages to be the best work he's done in any of them AT THE SAME TIME! Moreover, this is certainly one of the greatest books on the art of writing and publishing ever written--EVERY aspiring writer would do well to read it.
I quite simply LOVE this book, and rate it among the best I've ever read. More to the point, I can honestly say that this is one of the very, very few books that has actually changed my life, and for the better. And it's an easy, fun, quick read--genius in the guise of talent. I've taken from it new ways of seeing the world, new possibilities--and from my own narrow and limited focuses, new ways of seeing my life. There is not a word wasted here, nor is there a sentence too much--*My Other Life* shows the potentialities implicit in every moment, and the importance involved in the responsibilities of being human.

Strong Start
By Amazon Customer
Marked for Death is an entertaining and action-packed story--which is exactly what one should expect when reading a novel based in a D&D gameworld. The main characters are well portrayed and the author does an excellent job writing dialogue for the villains--the antagonists have reasonable motivations (and explanations) for their actions which is something you rarely see in a genre novel such as this.

The only flaws in the book are its length and a rough shift in tone from the novel's start to its end. In terms of length, much of the action repeats itself, as other reviewers have noted. In terms of tone, the first (and much stronger) half of the novel feels like the classic western, "The Searchers." This portion is a grim, grounded story that really grabs the reader. In the second half of the story, however, the action goes rather widescreen echoing one of the big action scenes of Attack of the Clones.

The two halves just don't fit well together and I wish that Mr. Forbeck had remained true to the Western feel that he so carefully crafted in the early parts of the story. That said, the good parts of the story outweigh the bad and I see real promise in this series.

A thrilling start to a new series
By Malarick
Okay. First of all I want to say that a lot of the reviews that have been given so far have been quite unfair.

This is by no means a bad novel, in fact it is quite the opposite.

I had no previous knowledge as to what this book was going to be about, and as I am not an expert on Eberron I was not even sure what Dragonmarks really represented. So going into this I was open minded, and ready to be educated.

Before Marked for Death, there had only been one other Eberron novel which was Keith Bakers 'City of Towers' which many people raved about. But I found it to be inferior compared to Matt Forbecks novel. Now Keith Baker was a first time novelist, so I am ready to give him another chance it the future.

Matt is a great visual storyteller. All the way through the book I was right there in the moment, in every scene.

From the moment I started reading about the frontier town on Mardakine, to the final sequences on the moving Warforged City I was gripped.

I really enjoyed the characters of this novel, especially Kandler. He is a character with quite a bit of history, but I still think that he will evolve farther over the course of the series.

One of the things people have complained the most about is Espre, and it is something that I mentioned a couple of times too. Espre gets captured and released, and captured again frequently through the novel.

If anyone has ever watched the TV show '24' then it is quite like watching Kim Bauer getting herself into bad sitautions.

But I still love watching '24' and I will certainly keep reading more of Matts novels.

A pretty good book
By Lucafin Nailo
This was a pretty good book. Matt Forbeck does a good job of describing the battle scenes, and he does a good job with the character Kandler. However, the saving and losing and recapturing and re-kidnapping of Espre gets a bit tedious. Other than that, it is a good book. I really liked the part with the deathless wizard.

Disappointed - this book is a let down in the series
By Quincy
This is - in my opinion - the WORST book in the series. Be warned!

Where previous books were maintaining a clear and consistent tone in terms of charactes, this one is just WAY off.

The characters seem to converse in much different manner, more simplifieg, often childish, lacking the depth and substance that the in the previous books.

Nearly ALL conversations are broken up - it's very annoying, tiring, and makes the story hard to follow.

Quenthel telling Pharaun "I hate you" close to the beginning of the book dispels the magic that the previous four books have successfully woven together.

This book is filled with this type of "gems" that made me wonder if author actually read the previous ones before sitting down and writing it.

The characters also are reacting and thinking differently, almost as if they had personality changes.

While I understand different authors' styles, this book has offered the least consistency in the character department.

After blazing my way 4 books back-to-back, I have lost interest in the story because of this single book.

The book also has several continuity issues that have not been quite addressed. Those of us that do remember what happened in the previous parts of the storey, can spot those easily.

Honestly, it makes me wonder whether this was a first attempt of the author into writing, it was so bad. ARGH!

Not good....not bad
By B. Lorenz
I must say I was quite annoyed in the very drastic way some characters changed in this book. I was overall disappointed the way characters acted in battles giving me often the impression they are novices of their trade.

The battle with Gromph and Dyrr in particular is just utterly pathetic, not only does it stretch itself trough the whole book but it also fails to keep the suspension, dramatic and epic feeling up while leaving the impression both characters repeat their actions (mostly using rings or wands all the while levitating and flying around) time and time again in every chapter.

Characters like Triel, Vhok or Horgar are totally neglected and barely even mentioned. The whole siege loses it`s dramatic importance giving us no insight of the struggle of the other Matron mothers and their houses while the author focuses on confusing and drastic changes for Danifae...suddenly able to teleport to whereever she wants to go to with her ring and other things that are just too much to list here...

All in all the book ain`t totally bad but the tranistion from one author to another and the changes that come with that are so drastic and disturbing that in my opinion the editors really failed to do their job
