A Solid Four out of Five!
By Skuldren
The Sentinel is a fun fantasy tale that sets a band of heroes on an adventure to save the world. A watchmen, a noble, a thief, and a murderer must deliver the eye of an orc god to rescue Toril from Shar’s destruction. Along the way, they fight Shadovar, orcs, ghouls and zombies, crossing oceans, forests and even the Underchasm itself. The characters keep things interesting with their shifting motivations. However, saving the world comes at a high price, and author Troy Denning keeps the reader guessing at who will pay the cost.

“There are no truths more dangerous than terrible truths,” Malik said. “Those are the kind no one wishes to see.”

Featured on the cover is one of the main characters. Kleef is a topsword in the Marsember Watch. He’s a Chosen of the god Helm. Yet his life has not been very special. The ranks of the city guard are rife with corruption. Kleef’s sense of duty and fairness has caused him to be overlooked for promotions. He has little to show for his devotion to Helm. A good fighter with a big sword, Kleef is a character who has much to discover about himself. His flaws, his god’s gifts, and the mysterious magic sword that he wields are all things he must explore.

Sadly not pictured on the cover is Arietta. This story is as much her’s as it is Kleef’s. She is a noble’s daughter and a follower of Siamorphe. Like Kleef, she goes through a journey of self-discovery. Her stout beliefs of courage, duty and leadership bring her into a quest to save the world. Unlike Kleef, though, she must make tougher sacrifices and work twice as hard to survive the adventure. Her god may grant the gift of leadership, but when it comes to combat, she must rely on herself to persevere.

“Are you truly that devoted, Malik?” Joelle finally asked. “You would die for me?”

“Die?”

“You said you were devoted,” Joelle reminded him. “Aren’t you?”

Malik hesitated. “Would dying truly be necessary?”

Then there is the thief of hearts and the Seraph of lies rounding out the team of heroes. Joelle is the Chosen of Sune, the god of love. Malik is the Chosen of Cyric, the god of lies. They are an unlikely duo working together to try to serve their gods. When they join paths with Kleef and Arietta, it would seem to be divine intervention. But everyone has their own motivations which adds to the complexity of the plot.

Up against them in their quest is the shade prince Yder and an army of orcs. Yder’s inclusion in the story adds for some nice tie-ins, something this book does well. There are lots of mentions to events that occurred in Paul S. Kemp’s books in regards to Netheril and Rivalen’s incident in Ondulin. The Shadovar are taking over Cormyr and the story reflects that. There are also lots of moments highlighting the changes the world is going through, and direct signs of Aberil and Tori’s separation. Denning even ties into the previous book in the Sundering series, The Reaver, by including the Gnome smuggler Greathorne. All of these elements bring together the other stories in the Realms and The Sundering to make The Sentinel feel like an even grander story. It’s not just a little adventure, but an observation and participation in the separation of worlds. History is in the making, and by tying into those other stories, this is the first book which really makes this feel like a series, like all those other adventures mattered and had purpose.

Without delving too much into more into the details, The Sentinel is a fun fantasy story that’s worth checking out. It has good characters, lots of action, and a variety of adventures as the heroes endeavor to deliver the Eye of Gruumsh in an effort to save the world. As part of The Sundering series, it does a lot to move the overall plot forward as the world’s split. All in all, I give The Sentinel a solid four out of five. It’s a lot of fun.

Another Great Addition to the Series
By Mother/Gamer/Writer
The Sentinel is the fifth book in The Sundering series, a series that takes place in Dungeons and Dragons universe. I have previously read the third book in the series, The Adversary, so I did skip a book, but wasn’t confused, so you can read the books out of order, or as standalone novels and be fine. I really enjoyed The Adversary and The Sentineldid not disappoint.

The Sentinel follows four characters, Kleef, Arietta, Joelle, and Malik as they attempt to deliver the Eye of Gruumsh to it’s destination, all while trying to keep it out of the hands of the Shadovar and the orcs. The novel chronicles their journeys, their hardships, and of course their personal lives.

This novel started off really slow for me, and I can’t put my finger on why. It started off with some action packed scenes, there was a giant fight against the Shadovar, and even Arietta, who is a noble, gets in on the action. So if you’re into action scenes and battles, you’ll be hooked right away, but it took me probably a quarter of the book to really get into it.

And now for the good things! I enjoyed the characters. A lot. They’re each motivated by different things, and they act like they’re all trying to help the greater good, but they’re clearly in it for themselves, or at least two of them are. Kleef is a Watchmen, a guard of sorts, and his family has always served Helm, a god that has been believed to be dead for quite some time. Between serving a dead god and the corruption that Kleef sees in the nobility, he has a hard time seeing the point in his work, so he has his own lack of faith to work on.

Arietta hates the way that her father would rather run from the city than actually stay and help their people, like she feels a noble is supposed to. Then there are Joelle and Malik, only interested in getting the Eye to their destination in one piece and pleasing their own gods.

Another thing that kind of bothered me about the novel was I feel like not a lot happened…? Which is weird, because there was definitely an epic journey and a mission, and things happened, so I’m not entirely sure why I feel that way. The pacing seemed to jump around a bit, which threw me off, but it wasn’t enough to the point where I got really confused.

Overall, I’m giving The Sentinel 4 out of 5 controllers. It had a good plot, good characters, good battle scenes, but it started out really slow and the jumps in time didn’t really seem that natural.

Immensely Satisfying
By Kelly
Set during the Era of Upheaval, The Sundering is a multi-author event chronicling the adventures of Faerûn’s heroes, from those just Chosen to some of the Realms most enduring characters. Troy Denning’s novel, The Sentinel, is the penultimate entry in the series. As such, it is suitably thrilling from beginning to end.

Like many during the Era of Upheaval, Kleef Kenric has spent his life worshipping a long-forgotten god. It is said that so long as one person carries a god in their heart, that god is not dead. Helm, The Watcher, god of guardians, could not save his father. While others accept bribes and trade favours for knighthood, Kleef stubbornly clings to the tenets of his faith – coming to the defense of those who ask, leaving his career with the city guard stalled at the rank of Topsword. Kleef’s unswerving faith has turned him bitter.

While battling to win free of Marsember, Kleef accepts payment from a merchant in order to clear the way. He uses the gold to motivate the guards beneath his command to do the job they are already sworn to do. His guilt over the act is not easily rationalised but with priests holding up the evacuation with their theatrics and Shadovar threatening the city, he has little choice but to rally his men the only way he can.

While tracking the Shadovar, he comes to the aid of a mysterious pair, Joelle Emmeline and her short and odiferous companion, Malik. Kleef fights back wave after wave of Shadovar and Joelle and Malik flee across a bridge toward the noble house of Seasilver. They are observed from the balcony by Lady Arietta Seasilver, a young noblewoman who believes she is the Chosen of Siamorphe. Taking up her bow, Arietta joins the fight. Thus fate combines four destinies of four people trying to serve their gods.

The Sundering refers to the separation of Abeir from Toril. While the living (and sort of living) denizens of the world deal with the fallout of the Era of Upheaval – from the Great Rain to falling earthmotes to the literal upheaving of earth – the gods are battling for supremcy. Often, they do so through their Chosen. Joelle and Malik are on a quest for Sune. They carry the Eye of Gruumsh as a gift from one god to another. As such a gift would foil Shar’s plans for the Ever After, the Shadovar are keen to get their hands on the Eye. So are the orcs. The Eye is one of their sacred relics.

Their journey to the Underchasm is frought with adventure. Arietta sacrifices her family and Kleef feels he is sacrificing his principles for a woman who will never return his ardent regard. Joelle uses her god-given charm to ensure everyone follows her plan and Malik is obstinate in his deviancy. By the time the four arrive at Grumbar’s Temple, alliances have shifted many times – as has each companion’s idea of what it means to be Chosen.

It’s this last that really captured my attention while reading The Sentinel. Kleef’s struggle to defend his faith, to himself and those around him is heart-wrenching. In order to succeed on this quest, he has to do away with his bitterness and regret. When he finally does, I reached for the tissue box. Arietta’s journey is equally compelling. She has only been told she is the Chosen of Siamorpeh and as such, has taken her role for granted. This revelation rocks her ideas and ideals, and ultimately brings her closer to what she really wants to be.

I really enjoyed this book and as has happened every time I pick up a new volume of ‘The Sundering’, I am inspired to look for other works by the author. Troy Denning’s writing is accessible and easy to digest. I read The Sentinel in two devoted sessions, breaking only for dinner. As mentioned above, what really makes this book stand out are the characters, particularly Kleef and Arietta. Their thoughts and actions were so appropriate to their situations. At no point did either feel unreal or overwrought. Malik was fascinating in his own grimace-worthy manner. Though he is not likeable, I did manage to muster empathy for him. I’m still trying to decide how I feel about Joelle. I think perhaps she is actually the most devious and unsympathetic of that pair.

The conclusion to The Sentinel was another tissue box moment and another step forward in the world event. Overall, this is an immensely satisfying book.

‘The Sundering’ is nearly done. Only one volume remains: The Herald: The Sundering, Book VI by Ed Greenwood. Through all six books are linked only tenuously, I have enjoyed the experience of reading several stories surrounding the same event. Each has advanced the world narrative and each has introduced me to another, smaller world of characters. My only complaint would be the steadily growing pile of books behind me as I discover new authors whose voices I must further explore.

Among the best known and most quoted books of the Old Testament, the Book of Psalms contains some 150 hymns of praise, prayers of crisis, and songs of faith once attributed solely to the Biblical King David. It is now believed that this collection of poems, originally chanted or sung with instrumental accompaniment, reflects Israel's entire history from the period of the exodus (13th century B.C.) to the postexilic restoration (after 600 B.C.), and we cherish them as the expressions of faith of many generations and many peoples. The Book of Psalms is shared by all sections of Judaism and Christianity, and is fundamental to both Christian and Jewish liturgies. Its English translation in the King James Version of the Bible (1611), from which this edition is reprinted complete and unabridged, is an exceptionally beautiful and stirring one, long regarded as a classic of English literature.

Composed originally as liturgical music performed in the ancient Israelite temple, the Psalms are the most musical and thus euphonic works in the Bible. Though most poetic in the original Hebrew, the King James translation is the next best choice, having been written with a special ear to retaining the poetic quality of the original. The star of LOGAN'S RUN, CABERET, and THE THREE MUSKETEERS, Michael York brings profound emotion and expression to his reading. His pacing and pronunciation are perfect. The 150 hymns to God are punctuated by short Elizabethan musical pieces. Michael York makes it easy to imagine what it would be like listening to King David recite these words. You can tell it's imitation leather - but other than that it's fine. This was a gift for my father in law who is 89, so the large print is great. The size is just right - easy to carry and read.

Handy, If Not Quite Essential
By Andalusi
This is basically a Monster Manual for Saga, split into NPCs, creatures, and droids. As a miscellany of opponents, it does a good job: you'll find plenty of people and beasties to throw against your PCs. There's some neat new rules and PC alien and droid options, too.

The organization could have been better. For instance, instead of slipping in the option to play Miralukas under Jerec the fallen Jedi's entry or playing a Bith under the Black Sun Vigo entries, why not put the new race options in one place at the end? The same goes for new equipment, skills, and feats.

But the entries themselves are quite good. In addition to stat blocks, you get commentary on what role the character, beast, or droid can play in an adventure. A number of entries are statted out at different Challenge Levels, too, and in the case of NPCs, include advice on what sort of lower CL minions such an NPC would tend to have.

Overall, this is a useful book; perhaps not a must-have at $35, but for Amazon's much lower price, I'm satisfied.

More a collection of average NPCs to place within your adventures than a guideline to how a GM might create interesting and exciting NPCs. As such I can only give it a two-star rating. Advertised as "everything you need to populate you Star Wars games" it falls a bit short.

While it does include stats for NPCs, beasts, and droids, there are sparse (if any) guidelines as to how a GM might create original material for his or her game.

At the standard (for Saga Edition) 9"x9" format, this 160 page book is a bit slim for its intended purpose. At 35 dollars, its not a great deal for what you get.

Falls short...really short
By 007
I'll start with the positives. The book is nicely put together for the most part, and of good quality. It has a nice selection of characters from the various books, games and movies--except for the ones that will be included in other books coming out in the next few months, such as a KOTOR guide and a New Jedi Order supplement.

The thing that I don't like about this book--it should have been included elsewhere. They "slimmed down" the rules in this iteration of the game, but they overslimmed. So instead of having all of these characters in the core book like they did in the past, they pulled them out and charged me for yet another book. And what is this desire to continue printing the books in this odd size? 160 pages really means about 120 when you factor in the smaller size of the pages.

Many of the characters don't have any pictures or drawings at all, and as I said, they really rob you by leaving out a bunch of the major players, only to put them into other books and charge you AGAIN over the next few months. They really could have and should have done a better job with this, but the material that you get is reasonably good, but it is certainly priced to high.

Overall disappointing. Some worthwhile parts.
By J. Stoner
I read both Whisper of Waves (Forgotten Realms: Watercourse Trilogy Book 1) and Lies of Light: The Watercourse Trilogy, Book II (The Watercourse Trilogy) the days they came out. I was originally very excited about this trilogy because of the mentioned "world shattering" event (completion of the canal) and thought this would be a very interesting trilogy because the "world shattering" event was not a huge war or the magical artifact changing the world; but rather a politically motivated, blood and sweat event.

This being the final series in the Watercourse Trilogy I was expecting great things from this book. I really enjoyed the first book and somewhat disappointed in the second book. The chapters are extremely short and the storyline jumps all over the place. Not only this, but the books span several years and unless you are very knowledgable about the Faerun calendar system or pay close attention the months and dates at the beginning of every chapter it can be difficult to follow how much time has passed between chapters. This book did a better job of verbally explaining how long someone had been in jail or exiled compared to the book's predecessors; but, it was still slightly difficult to gauge the time. There is a helpful calendar explanation as an appendix, and this would have been more helpful in the first two books, as well.

The one shining part of this trilogy was one of the main characters: Ivar Devorast. I thought he was an intriguing character and I thoroughly enjoyed his attitude and demeanor. Some of the other characters I could have done without as their story lines were hardly engaging and I didn't care what really happened to them.

Overall, a very disappointing trilogy with so much potential. I would only recommend this book to those that have already read the first two books in the Watercourse Trilogy and die-hard Forgotten Realms fans.

Disappointing novel, very disappointing trilogy
By Andy Gray
Scream of Stone by Philip Athans is the final book in the Watercourse Trilogy. The first book in this trilogy is titled Whisper of Waves (Forgotten Realms: Watercourse Trilogy Book 1) and the second is titled Lies of Light: The Watercourse Trilogy, Book II (The Watercourse Trilogy). For fans of the Forgotten Realms this book, and series for that matter, this book is unlike most other Forgotten Realms books. It is written in very short chapters, most about 2-5 pages. It goes without saying, but if you have not read the first two books in this trilogy than you really do need to before reading this one. There are events that occur in this book that would make very little sense to someone who is not up to speed with the rest of the story.

The plot of this novel carries on with the plot from the first two books fairly well. There are also a couple sub-plots that are brought to conclusions from the previous books. The main plot line is of a character attempting to make a canal to connect the Lake of Steam and the Nagaflow. However, there are some that don't want this to happen, and of course some that do want it to come to fruition. One of the sub-plots is a Thayan envoy attempting to play the senators against each other to get what he wants. Another sub-plot involves a character from the first two books and something that happened to him and what he is set to do now. Overall, this book, for the most part, continues the overall plot lines of the first two books.

The characters in this novel are largely the same as from the previous two books. In my reviews of the first two books I commented that largely the characters seemed flat and uninteresting. Not much has really changed with this book. I still enjoyed the character Ivar, and I found myself more interested in Pristoleph other than those two though, the characters seemed flat and uninteresting. They seem to be cast in clichéd roles and were two-dimensional. There was very little true character development in this book, and really in this trilogy, aside from a few small instances. From the start of this book, it is fairly obvious what is going to happen in terms of how the characters will act and what, in the end, will occur.

This book, as a whole, is really nothing but average. The clichéd characters could have been salvaged. However, how the book was written, jumping from piece to piece via these ultra short chapters makes for a book that feels disjointed and it was extremely difficult for me to focus on something. It seemed every time the story was picking up steam, there was a new chapter and a dramatic shift in events.

Aside from the clichéd characters and flow, my main criticism of this book is that this trilogy has always been billed as a `Realms Shaking Event'. Something that would change the landscape of Faerun forever. However, at the conclusion of this book and trilogy, very little (if anything) has been changed. In fact, once I finished the book I felt as though I was merely back at square one where the firs novel picked up. I felt distinctively cheated by this fact. I invested the time and effort to read three novels, only to be back where I started.

Phil Athan is a wonderful author, and I have enjoyed many of his previous works. However, this trilogy is not one of them. I feel let down by the conclusion, I feel let down by the flatness of the characters. All in all it was just a blah reading experience for me. While there are some decent moments in this novel, they do not save this book (or trilogy) from mediocrity. This will not be a book, or trilogy, that I will be recommending to people.

A fine ending for a fine trilogy
By corduroy21
Scream of Stone is the third part of the Watercourse Trilogy and although Book 1 was for me the best one, the third book is a more than enough closing book for this trilogy.
What I liked most about this trilogy is that it is mainly based on characters without exceptional abilities. They are not powerful fighters, wizars or whatever. With the exception of the main villain of the trilogy they are just plain people caught up in the events.
This makes this trilogy different than most Forgotten Realms trilogies, it is based on politics and on the differences among the characters.
Yes, there is the occasional cliched dwarf or other characters that seem unimportant, but there at least 3 or 4 great characters and a wonderful storyline that makes up for the few fights and the lack of hack-n-slash dungeon crawling.
If you wish to read a book that is somewhat different than the usual "good guy vs bad guy" Forgotten Realm novel, then this book and this trilogy are recommended.

The Godborn: The Sundering, Book II, by Paul S. Kemp

In the 2nd book of the multi-author Sundering series launched by New York Times best-selling author R.A. Salvatore, the shadow legacy of Erevis Cale lives on even as his old foe Mephistopheles seeks to stamp it out at any cost. Cale’s son Vasen—unmoored in time by the god Mask—has thus far been shielded from the archdevil’s dark schemes, alone among the servants of the Lord of Light who have raised him since birth.

Living in a remote abbey nestled among the Thunder Peaks of Sembia, Vasen is haunted by dreams of his father, trapped in the frozen hell of Cania. He knows the day will come when he must assume his role in the divine drama unfolding across Faerûn. But Vasen knows not what that role should be . . . or whether he is ready to take it on. He only knows what his father tells him in dreams—that he must not fail.

Enter Drasek Riven, a former compatriot of Erevis Cale, now near divine and haunted by dreams of his own—he too knows the time to act is near. Shar, the great goddess of darkness, looks to cast her shadow on the world forever. Riven has glimpsed the cycle of night she hopes to complete, and he knows she must be stopped.

At the crossroads of divine intrigue and mortal destiny, unlikely heroes unite to thwart the powers of shadow and hell, and the sundering of worlds is set on its course.

Book 2 of the Sundering tops Book 1 in every regard!
By J. Stewart
The Godborn caught me off guard, having just read The Companions I had that image of the Forgotten Realms in my brain and beyond the Drizzt books the Forgotten Realms books I recall off the top of my head included the Baldur's Gate novels and some of the Harper's books, all of which, with one exception, were similar in style and tone, which was a fairly standard one for fantasy novels. The Godborn right off the bat shatters that tone and makes it's reader well aware that it is a dark novel full of a conflict between light and dark or as I would say, "hope vs. despair" and captures each side of it perfect.

Focusing on several characters, one being the son of Erevis Cale, another Gerak a companion of his, Orovis, and two cursed brothers, we get to see how pieces are moved around this world like an epic chess match but as each piece is moved, the board, covered by a "fog of war" (to use an RTS term) is revealed little by little, catching each side off guard. The novel captures the spirit of little guys being part of a massive game between higher powers so well that I tried to figure out what was really going on, ahead of the character I was following in the novel and it drew me deeper and deeper into the novel.

This story has everything from love to loss, hope and despair, joy and sorrow. There are moments that make you smile and moments that make you cry or want to throw the novel at the wall, but you wont, because the story that Paul S. Kemp was woven together is so intriguing that you cant stop and once one arrives to the last 30% of this novel, this escalate so quickly that there is no stopping.

There are no weak characters here, some are definitely more favored than others, my favorite arcs to read were the brothers (the cursed ones that I won't spoil much of here), Gerak, and Rivalin. Each of them get a great moment or two to shine that really make you want to fist pump and shout and each get a moment where you feel sorry for them and want to comfort. Altogether they were great well rounded characters. Not to say that others were bad, they were not, but these were my favorites and kept me in.

Not to say too much about this novel, but THE GODBORN comes out October 1 and I fully recommend everyone buys it. I would give it a solid A as far as fantasy goes.

The Culmination of a Great Story
By Skuldren
The Godborn is certainly a book full of surprises for Erevis Cale fans. For those new to Paul S. Kemp's famous shadow warrior, you're in for something different. As the title implies, divinity plays a large role in this dark, dramatic adventure. Some characters seek it out, while others try to avoid it. Yet within this book of fantasy, there's an interwoven thread of horror that's sure to play on reader's emotions. It's rather fitting considering one of the antagonists in the novel is a ruler of Hell.

If you are new to the Erevis Cale series, The Godborn serves as the long awaited climax of the Twilight Wars Trilogy. In those books, Erevis Cale, Drasek Riven, and Magadon the half-devil mind mage try to stop a shade named Rivalen from bringing about the end of the world. Rivalen is a Shadovar prince and a worshiper of Shar, the Lady of Loss. Shar is a goddess who seeks to bring sweet oblivion to the universe by destroying one world at a time. Through the Twilight War, Erevis and his colleagues waged a war against shadows, end up with a piece of a god's divinity, and do battle with the ruler of the eighth hell...Magadon's father.

In The Godborn, the story mostly follows Erevis Cale's son, Vasen. Through dreams and guidance from characters like Riven, Vasen must save his father from the eighth hell. Along the way, he makes some friends who become very enjoyable new characters. Long time fans may be disappointed that there isn't much of Erevis or Mags in this book. However, Riven and the Shadovar prince Brennulus play key parts with some very nice scenes. Some gigantic battles take place, along with some highly personal ones. There's a lot to enjoy.

One of the surprising elements, though, is the horror story twisted within the plot. Two new characters, Sayeed and Zeeahd, take part in the most violent and repulsive scenes in the book. They enter as mysterious wanderers in search of something. But it quickly becomes evident that something is not right about these two. Horrors follow in their wake and Paul S. Kemp gives Stephen King a run for his money. I have to admit I wasn't expecting the horror elements and they seemed a little out of place and over the top. However, the things these two characters do certainly provoke strong emotions. It got to the point where I couldn't wait for them to be punished or better yet killed.

Aside from the horror scenes, divinity plays a big part in the story. From the events of the Twilight Wars Trilogy, Rivalen, Riven and Mephistopheles (Magadon's father) are all part divine, having consumed a piece of the god Mask. Riven finds divinity to be a burden and wants to get rid of it. Mephistopheles simply hungers for more and wants to kill Riven and Rivalen to get it. Then there's Vasen who is the key to releasing the divinity and fulfilling Mask's ultimate plan to avenge himself against the goddess Shar. Yet Vasen posses no divinity. He's not even as powerful as his dad was in most of the series. But Vasen has faith. His faith in divinity, in the divine Amaunator, god of the dawn, is his strength. Balanced with shadows in his blood, he walks the darkness and the light.

For casual readers, this is a fantasy story with intriguing characters and a significant touch of horror. For the longtime readers such as myself, this is the culmination of a great story arc. That also means there's a lot riding on this story. Does Erevis Cale come back to life? Does Mask triumph over Shar? Can the new characters compete with the likes of Erevis, Riven, Jak and Mags? Is there a payoff? Well, I won't spoil anything suffice to say that yes, the new characters are really good and the payoff is well worth it. The Godborn tackles a lot and Kemp gets it done. There is closure at the end, as well as new beginnings. Having read all of the Erevis Cale books, I was very satisfied with the ending. All the twists and turns and emotional pitfalls led to some great scenes, great characters, and a great story. I give it a five out of five.

Another great novel for Forgotten Realms
By Craig B. Meyer
REVIEW OF ADVANCED READERS COPY

Paul S Kemp does it again with his upcoming book GODBORN. GODBORN is the second book in the Sundering Series taking place in the Forgotten Realms universe. The book has been a long time coming. I have to say that the book's delay is one of the reasons that I had given up on Forgotten Realms. I can now forgive them for the wait. It was a great read with Mr. Kemp demonstrating his talent for storytelling.

GODBORN isn't just a by the numbers swords and sorcery novel. It's about people dealing with difficult issues and overcoming challenges. Paul S Kemp manages to draw me into the story and start caring for his characters. I definitely recommend this book. However, if you have never read Paul S Kemps forgotten realms books before, I would recommend you start off with Twilight Falling: The Erevis Cale Trilogy, Book I
